Commons Select Committee is told by FA chairman Greg Clarke that an openly gay Premier League player would still suffer "significant abuse".

Would they? Why? Do openly gay male athletes in other sports suffer abuse during events? There seem to be a significant number of openly gay female athletes and they don't seem to have the same concerns.

In 2014 Michael Sam was the first openly gay player drafted by an NFL team. There had been some protests against his playing whilst at college (rabid church going types) but his arrival in a sport subject to enormous media coverage was received positively. As it happened he didn't hang around because he wasn't good enough but at least nobody suggested this was due to his sexuality.

What would happen to a footballer in the UK? We'll never know until someone is brave enough to come out publicly.

Michael Sam was the SEC (Southeastern Conference) defensive player of the year playing for Missouri. The SEC is one of the elite conferences of college football here.

The fact he couldn't make it was undoubtedly more about him being gay than his skills.

If the defensive player of the year had come from, let's say Alabama or Louisiana State (SEC schools) he would have been showered with millions if he had not been gay.

There was clearly a zone of discomfort to have him in the locker room. Which I believe is why he was released.

The Premier League is not ready for a gay player.

Interesting comments from Chris Sutton on the subject.
