Bees to be stung by the Super U's at the WHCS this weekend 12:35 - Feb 10 with 1320 views | durham_exile | After a long nomadic existence on the roads of England JM is able to prepare for a home match against the Bees this weekend. Before focussing on matters Barnet, our thoughts are very much with Jim McAllister, the Blackpool defender, who suffered a fractured right tibia in the challenge with Sean Murray, who was subsequently dismissed. Having witnessed the event last Saturday and having watched the coverage since, it is clear that there was no intent to injure an opponent and it was a regrettable end to a match that certainly had not been bad tempered. Whilst Murray now misses the next three games, it is to be hoped that this unfortunate incident does not prey on his mind when he returns to action. The tackle was the more unfortunate because Murray had impressed during his debut with several impressive touches and challenges. Perhaps his attempts to impress combined with the heavy and unpredictable pitch only added to the conditions that led to the challenge. I include this, not to condone what happened, but perhaps to try to understand it. Meanwhile JM has decisions to make regarding his squad, which remains injury ravaged. Doug Loft, Lewis Kinsella, Drey Wright, Sammie Szmodics, Jermaine Grandison, Luke Prosser and Tommy O’Sullivan are medium to long term injuries whilst Tom Eastman is now doubtful after hobbling off last weekend. Brennan (Ben) Dickenson remains an injury doubt and the excellent Craig Slater continues to nurse an injury. Whilst JM muses on a starting XI for the Bees, it is important to consider the need to utilise the dwindling squad fully. Matt Briggs was superb last weekend and played a full 90 minutes which was impressive. Lloyd Doyley is now fit and the experienced defender is keen to play but so is Alex Wynter, who has become the forgotten man at the back for Col U. Kane Vincent-Young is also able to deputise for Richard Brindley whilst either George Elokobi or Matt Briggs could be selected for a left back berth if Brennan Dickenson returns to left midfield. Owen Garvan was simply superb last week with quality interventions and some sublime passing, which would not be out of place in the Championship. Meanwhile up front Rekeil Pyke must be considered for match minutes having signed on loan from Huddersfield. One additional thought on the opening day of the season at Hartlepool, I watched Denny Johnstone (introduced as a second half sub) and thought that he was capable of scoring several goals for us this season. Since then he has worked hard but failed to find the net as often as perhaps he should. Kurtis Guthrie is now being played as a striker and the results have been for all to see. Denny Johnstone needs to be considered in a more central position, when he comes on, to see whether this enables him to convert more opportunities. Therefore, I reckon something along the following lines for Saturday at the WHCS. Walker Doyley Kent Elokobi Brindley Fosu Lapslie Garvan Briggs Guthrie Porter Subs; Brill, Vincent-Young, Wynter, Johnstone, Pyke, Dickenson (if fit), James The team will also be pleased to enjoy home comforts with a better-quality pitch than that those experienced at Newport (simply shocking), Exeter and Blackpool. The weather here in Durham today is very cold -1 Celsius with occasional snow showers. The Colchester weather forecast is somewhat better with cloudy conditions tomorrow with temperatures around 3 degrees Celsius and light winds. Barnet, jointly led by Henry (Cardinal) Newman and Rossi Eames, will provide a stiff challenge and sit just below the U’s in the league two table. Colchester have four of their next five games at the WHCS and good results from these matches will set the club up nicely for the run in for a place in the top seven, but the third automatic promotion spot is still within touching distance. A decent 4,000 crowd tomorrow will be expecting a good result to maintain the pressure on those teams above us. The glass half empty brigade will point to the fact that we haven’t won for three games. Enjoy the match. Up the U’s [Post edited 10 Feb 2017 16:17]

Wessex the stats on the BBC write up suggest it was a very tight affair. No mention of the standard of the pitch but I would imagine it was a quagmire. If Plymouth do win today then the top two could be more or less confirmed but third place is still very much up for grabs. Our forthcoming four home games are key to our hopes for a place in the top seven, but hopefully that final automatic promotion place. It's going to be an exciting run in! Next week a new ground for me at the Crown Ground! Up the U's | |
