Railwaymen hit the buffers against the Super U's to leave them up the Junction 21:06 - Mar 17 with 748 viewsdurham_exile

David Artell’s Crewe Alexandra provide the opposition for JM’s Super U’s at Gresty Road tomorrow.

Colchester partially recovered from their mauling at the hands of Pompey with a victory over Mansfield Town on Tuesday evening to keep them within touching distance of the play offs.

JM knows however that a place in the top seven can only be secured if our Away record can be improved upon. Four victories so far are a poor return and must be bettered and in truth with Crewe, Notts County, Morecambe and Orient to play away from the fortress, we should be looking to obtain another 9 points from these games.

The home games on paper are more challenging, but Luton, Stevenage, Doncaster, Plymouth and Yeovil will not be relishing a game at the WHCS and this must be very much to our advantage.

Owen Garvan is unlikely to return this weekend and so JM is likely to name an unchanged team for the Railwaymen. Thirteen first teamers out injured must be approaching a record, but in reality, only four are sorely missed from the current team, (Kent, Eastman, Guthrie and Slater) because the majority of those injured have been out for virtually the whole season.

Next season, it will seem like we have signed a new squad of players!!!

Crewe previously had the Indian sign over Colchester with an unbeaten record for over 20 years at Layer Road and the WHCS before their 4-0 defeat earlier in the season. Many years ago, I watched Colchester win 4-1 at Gresty Road with Perry Groves scoring a spectacular goal. Any win tomorrow would suffice, but with Goal Difference likely to play a part at the end of the season, I would welcome more goals in the For column in the League Two table.

Therefore:

Walker

James Elokobi Briggs

Wright Murray Lapslie Szmodics

Pyke Porter Dickenson

Subs:
Barnes, Vincent-Young, Wynter, Kinsella, Edge, Fosu, Bonne

The table currently looks like this:

Doncaster 37 75
Plymouth 37 69
Pompey 37 65
Carlisle 37 59
Luton 36 58
Stevenage 37 58
Exeter 37 57
Blackpool 37 54
COL U 37 54

Consistency is now required because every win is vital to hone in on those Play Off positions. What has been unhelpful this week is resurrecting the transfer rumour concerning Brennan Dickenson. It would also seem that JM has been pedalling the story. Yes, we all know that once a player emerges the sharks come circling and in this case, it is our Suffolk fiends who have been and still remain interested.

Dickenson is a quality player who will undoubtedly play at a higher level one day, but it does not need to be Ipswich, he can do a lot better. In the meantime, however the Academy system is producing some home-grown talent at Colchester.

None more so than the current U23’s who have defeated Sunderland this evening to reach the Quarter Finals of the Premier League Cup. Dean Brill also saved a last minute penalty. A superb achievement by the team and well deserved.

In the meantime, the First Team need to take a leaf out of their book and secure a win tomorrow at Crewe.

Safe journey to the travelling faithful.

Just a heads-up chaps, currently sat in the stadium car park awaiting a second pitch inspection. Doesn't look too bad right now, but locals said they had a torrential cloud burst not too long ago. If it goes ahead, it will be a delayed kick-off.

The pitch was far better than Newport, Accrington etc etc.

Perhaps it would have best to have called it off.

Very disappointed.

One wonders what more injuries we can sustain through to the end of the season. Maybe we could request our opponents to maybe play 5-a-side?
Roll on next season when surely our injury problem cannot further manifest itself.
It's a disaster for Sammy as well as he makes a hell of a difference when he plays.

Looks like another typical away performance . Reminds you of a BR sandwich, might look good in the packet until opened, curls up along the edges, no substance in the middle and leaves a bad after taste, but the management thinks it OK .

Seems Porter is doomed to work alone up front, taking the blame for lack of production when it is a failing of the system that is the cause. When has one man up front, particularly one so immobile, ever worried the opposition back four?

I see Pyke was cautioned yesterday.
How many in the crowd shouted "Don't tell him Pyke" when the referee enquired "Vot is your name?
Wish I'd been there for that one.

Gerry you are absolutely right, Pyke was cautioned for a theatrical dive in front of the main stand and one wag shouted "don't tell him your name Pyke"

Lots of general bonhomie on a day when it was otherwise in short supply.

"Don't give him your name Pyke"

Oh a wag am I Durham?
"You stupid boy.....".
"....did your Mum tell you to wear that scarf?"

Been waiting a while for the opportunity!
Best since "Gordon's alive" (in best Brian Blessed voice).
Fortunately won't be using "We're doomed".

But in answer to Whalers question about a lonely Porter, Pyke was supposed to be on his shoulder and we went four up at the death and still couldn't score (whilst they did).

Bad day at the Office. No midfield, badly missing Garvan and Slater (now Szmodics). But a better performance from Drey Wright after a few shockers. Beaten by a better team on the day.

Noah, had I known it was you with the classic rendition, I would of course have credited you personally.

The moment was an oasis in a desert of 90 minutes of misery!

I don't recall General Bonhomie featuring in Dad's Army, but good to hear that such a high ranking officer graced Gresty Road, although "lots of..." might suggest a person of ample proportion in its horrible narrow short leg room seats.

Speaking of which....

Worst ever seating at a football ground, rear row of Southend main stand or anywhere in the South Africa Road Stand at QPR. At both I physically could not sit down (no leg room). I embarrasingly had to be escorted to another part of these grounds as I could not meet the stewards request to "sit down"

I am six foot two, size 13G shoe; ex county rugby; mainly muscle; 62cm shoulders (won't fit in Colchester hospital MRI scanner). I am not some freak and am reasonably fit and in proportion. Just a tall bloke. In any High Street store (or Internet catalogue) I am a 2XL, but in a Macron shirt it is 5XL (perhaps best we don't buy Italian condoms).

Five years ago, I could buy anything in the High Street, but t now I have to buy all my clothes over the Internet as nobody now stocks my size. Of course, I then pay top dollar. I have to buy extra legroom seats on aircraft. Jaguar withdraw the XK just as I am about to buy one and they replace it with the tiny F-Type when I need a G-Fitting.

Why is it that the UK/EU treats discrimination against 'persons of small stature' as a criminal offence yet discrimination against 'tall people' is acceptable unless green, an ogre and named Shrek?

Then some football clubs treat people as 'seniors ' at age 60, others at 65. I am fully retired and fall between. But the U's demand I pay for an adult ticket. Just heard Ipswich are switching to age 65, so that will pi55 off loads of their 60 to 65 year old customers. I paid a full N.I. stamp for 42 years and expected a bus pass at 60 and an old age pension at 65. Now I can't get either until aged 65 and 8 months. For younger persons it will soon be 68. So how long before Colchester United make it 68? One can fully understand the need for higher OAP retirement ages given increased longevity and 'demographic creep', but what is the justification for football clubs to charge higher prices for existing RETIRED persons over age 60? It's just greed.

Anybody else feel unjustly discriminated against?

Noah, you wouldn't get on well with M&S shirts which are now almost exclusively available in slim or super slim sizes, most tee shirts and casual clothes are tailored fit or slim.

Worst ever seating was the Away end at Bristol City - backless benches, before they developed that part of the stadium.

Do they still have cushions on the seats at Southend, last time I saw the U's win there, many of the home supporters through the seat covers onto the playing surface.

I totally agree with your gripe about Senior tickets. I am 61 and this season have attended matches with Colchester where the qualifying age has been 60 or 62 or 63 or 64 or 65, bizarre or what? At Crewe I paid £22 as an adult because the Senior age was 65.

Lack of consistency with pricing structures certainly annoys many supporters. Very frustrating.
