Or is it?

Little or no activity during the transfer window shouldn't be a big surprise to Us fans but this year feels very quiet indeed. Two players released, one gone on a free transfer, no deals done with those offered new contracts and no new signings.

Is any of this a cause for concern or do fans have faith that the club has it all under control? McGreal claimed in the media recently that Colchester Utd is a club for which players are keen to sign. He may be right but there is no obvious evidence to support his comments at the moment.

Sadly LB, the sound of silence is deafening on either transfers or signings or contract renewals.

This is the price we have to pay for languishing in League Two.

Last season is done and dusted and we now compete for a second season in the basement league.

George Elokobi, Richard Brindley, Drey Wright, Tom Eastman, Lewis KInsella, Kane Vincent-Young, Diaz Wright, Dean Brill and Charley Edge have all to decide on whether they are renewing their contracts or not.

Brennan Dickenson will be out until 2018, hopefully Kurtis Guthrie will be back in August, Luke Prosser equally could be back, Frankie Kent also, Doug Loft perhaps, and Craig Slater.

We need some good news by the beginning of July, when training recommences and the fixtures will have been thoroughly digested.

PS Billy Kee is still available!!!!

According to JMc earlier this week in the Gazette Agents are frequently calling him with players they would like us to look at.
Durham how much do Accrington want for Billy Kee as a matter of interest?

First preseason match is 20 days hence. Not so long to go. One assumes (and hopes) there will be some activity on all fronts before the end of this month otherwise it might be an unsettled start to preseason training. Not fatal to our ambitions, whatever they may be, but last minute shopping/brinkmanship rarely produces bargains when the market has many buyers and sellers.

Burnsie, Accrington are not looking to sell Kee. He started his second spell with the club in August 2015.

JM will have to put a cheeky enquiry in for him.

Every year we moan about apparent little activity then suddenly in the last week before the transfwer window closes we see a number of new signings, plus the odd departure. To me this is simply "good business".

It is always staggering how many good players (possibly from higher divisions) will still be 'out of contract' as the transfer deadline looms and many with family responsibilities will have to reassess their value and wage demands. That process will assist us keeping players at an affordable price whilst bringing in new also within limited available budget.

Those clubs that have already spent might no longer be competing given they have probably used up their Financial Fair Play budget. The process is now completely different for lower leagues compared to the extravagance of Premiership and Championship. It's all about "negotiation" and given his primary business skills lie in managing a recruitment business surely Robbie Cowling knows the ropes?

In other news Tarique Fosu has signed for Charlton Athletic from Reading on a two year deal.

Regardless of whether it is good business or not to leave everything until the last week before making transfer deals happen, the pool becomes smaller and smaller and the better players are swallowed up by the bigger fish.

We still need a striker whatever else happens.

Why "numerically challenged" Durham?

According to the Transfermkt website numerically we have one of the largest squads in the league. Admittedly a few players are out of contract soon, but even if they leave our residual squad numerically exceeds the average squad size. We have particularly added many players due to the graduation of Academy players and unavoidable response to injuries. More debateable is the fact that our aggregate estimated squad transfer market valuation is also amongst the higher, albeit our transfer value per player is average; again a product of greater squad headcount.

We hence will have to shed players to acquire new. So until contract negotiations are concluded with those that are out of contract to determine who stays, we are potentially limited as regards new due to Financial Fair Play budget limits. But the old guard won't sign whilst they think an offer from a higher wage payer might arrive soon. Yes, we need a striker to replace Porter, but maybe there is a Championship player similarly hoping for an offer that isn't going to come. With FFP this merry go-round has become a game of chess. Those clubs with comparatively smaller squads have been spending largely due to catch up or past departures or limitations. But we are certainly not numerically challenged, just limited in the one or two positions (until Johnson, Guthrie, Dickenson etc al get fit).

Noah, as soon as the nine players agree to sign their contract extension offers then all will be better.

Presently however we remain numerical challenged.

Our first signing last season was Prosser on June 21st., so still plenty of time.

Plenty of time for new signings but I believe that players are due back in the middle of next week and I expect by now that the club ought to know which (if any) of those out of contract players are likely to turn up.

They're either saving it all up for one big announcement or (worst case scenario) none of them are and they're keeping quiet about it.

I shall remain fairly sanguine about it as I don't think any of our out of contract players are irreplaceable as long as the right candidates are available.
