My understanding is that here seems to be a general propensity for football players to demand £xxx,xxx per week (or in Southend £x,xxx) TAX PAID.

Then the clubs don't make provision for PAYE payments.

To my mind, this is worse than Google that legally and legitimately rearranges its affairs to pay minimal tax.

I may be completely wrong, but I was always under the impression that players were self-employed rather than being an employee of a club. The tax bill would then be VAT on ticket sales etc rather than PAYE.

These situations arise with regularity but when was the last time a league club went under? I don't mean administration, rather the club actually ceased to exist or had to reconfigure itself at a much lower league level.

Good point. It seems that league clubs only tend to fold when they drop out of the league nowadays. Recent examples being Halifax, Darlington, Chester and Scarborough.

Back to the original question - the following link has the answer, and like the above, most clubs have folded after dropping out of the league.
