Olympic questions 19:58 - Aug 1 with 939 viewsbwildered

Thought I would open up a thread for any questions that arise while watching the Olympics.

So - Why is there not a left handed hockey stick ?

Poll: No half measure either 1 or 2 ?

It's because the game was largely developed in countries where the left hand was used for bottom wiping. Hence that hand isn't used for anything else, including Hockey.

(Am joking!)

It's all about health and safety. If a ball carrier meets a defender head on, if both have right handed sticks, their bodies won't collide. Hence it is deemed less dangerous than having alternate left and right sticks.

(Tell that to Team GB ladies captain - Kate Walsh and her broken jaw - ouch).

What idiot made the draw for the later stages of the ladies doubles badminton before the tournament (instead of after the round robins)?

It was predicatable that what occured would happen - once one Chinese pair had unexpectedly lost and that meant facing the other Chinese pair had they won in the next round robin match. Their only weakness was that the Koreans were even worse at deliberately losing than they!

But in many 'team' sports, like motor sport, ice hockey, cycling, water polo and similar, all sorts of team skullduggery is tolerated to ensure a particular team member has the best chance of winning. So what have they actually done wrong? OK, may be against Olympic spirit to deliberately lose, but I blame the organisers.

It must happen all the time in Soccer tournaments - but less obvious - as winning a group does normally mean weaker (runner up) opposition.

How does one explain the need for water polo? It does not seem much different from messing about in the pool on holiday.

Poll: Safe standing at football; yes, know or don't know?

Why do some sports accept the professional, ie Andy Murray, yet Boxing is all amateurs?

Perhaps the most pertinent question of all is why are there still so many empty seats? Far too many have ended up in the hands of touts (as usual) and corporate hospitality (as usual).

A friend of mine really wanted to take his two young lads to an event as both are mad keen on sports. Having failed in every attempt to buy tickets direct he investigated the corporate route and was quoted over £400 per ticket, which included hotel rooms. As he lives in London he didn't need the hotel rooms so asked for a price just for the tickets. He was told that couldn't be done so he gave up.

However good or bad these games are judged to be "on the pitch", the empty seat fiasco will always be a black mark against the organisers.

Why do I keep expecting to see Robin Asquith or Sid James at the Beach Vollyball?

Leadbelly tell your friend that you can still buy tickets through the official LOCOG website for events each day.

Some of the tickets might be in the upper price brackets but they are available.

If you have not already registered for an account it only takes minutes to obtain one. If you have an account simply input the day that you want tickets for and the system displays all events and tickets for that day.

I will pass on the information but the question remains...if so many people tried and failed to buy tickets months ago why are there still empty seats and tickets available?

IOC always have a back up lit in a Davy safety lamp....

...and in any instance, the "caldron" lit during the opening ceremony (in the middle) was extinguished to allow it to be moved to a new position.

No evidence of the games being abandoned after that.

Which is the most successful nation at London 2012 in terms of medals won per head of population? I bet China are rubbish!

Genuine question BTW.

Grenada 1 Gold per 110,000

That's even better than the Peoples Republic of Yorkshire. What nonsense that was. ...."if Yorkshire was a country"....

Mersea Island got a silver....maybe it should declare independence!
