It seems not everyone appreciates Usain Bolt saying he is a living legend (even if he was only repeating what was said to him by the media)

He has done what no other athlete has done, defend 100m & 200m Olymic titles. He may well do the same in the 100 m relay(I wouldn't bet against it!)

He is accused of being arrogant but it strikes me he is, unsurprisingly, very confident and is not afraid to say what he thinks. Contrast that with the dull fare offered by most "media savvy" US athletes (I'm just foccussed on my next race etc etc)

I watched the 200m final in Manningtree Station Buffet. There were a few people in there anyway but our train arrived a minute or so before the race started and it filled up quickly. Everyone seemed impressed or pleased(or both) with the result and left shortly after. I didn't spot anyone obviously Jamaican so I guess they, like me, stopped to watch just because Bolt was running, not because it was the 200m final.Bolt has that effect.

Regardless of what people think of Bolt I know what an effect he had on my 9 year old step son before, during and after the 100m final. He was so excited and talked about it for hours afterwards. If that is what Bolt can do, by being "arrogant", I say long may it continue.

The media do have a tendency to elevate people to levels of popularity, and influence and wealth as a result, that are not matched by their talent. Not so in this case.

Living legend? Depends on your definition I suppose but, in sporting terms, he has to be...as are Sir Chris Hoy and Michael Phelps to name but two.

Having watched (sadly only on TV) the 100 and 200 sprints, I totally agree that Bolt is a legend. That title is used too often in conversation these days but Bolt totally justifies the title.

Sir Steve Redgrave for me is the greatest British Olympian of all time.
6 olympics (5 Gold 1 silver).

One final point, I watch Denise Lewis sitting in that studio in the evenings and tend to forget about the athletics!!!

SIx golds , 4 x individual and 2 x team and breaking world records , with the world stopping to watch him perform puts him in the legend bracket with people like Jesse Owens , Carl Lewis and MIchael Johnson .

Poll: No half measure either 1 or 2 ?

Yep - I'd go along with living legend, the man is a class apart from everyone else, and has been for so many years. My niece met Usain Bolt and Yohan Blake when she was up in London a few months ago. Said he was really nice, friendly, happy to chat, even posed for a photo with her (which Blake had to take - bet he really hates that )

My stepson's girlfriend was a 'gamesmaker' volunteer and she had to escort those in the 200 metres heats to their blocks (e.g. carry their kit boxes etc).

She echoed the above and said that whatever outward display of arrogance, showmanship, and media savviness - Usain Bolt was very polite, courteous and particulary respectful of all the volunteers (as were all the athletes).

The debate will always rage, which was the 'best' olympics, but only the feats on the track will ever survive the memory and Bolt and Mo will be the two. By contrast, most opening cermonies are surpassed in future by new technology and and eventually forgotten.

But what makes London 2012 stand out were the 'gamesmakers' - collectively they perhaps are the "legend of 2012" - or hopefully, at least the legacy - as we all embrace the "Big Society" - and take greater personal responsibility to make this country a better place.

Actually - just read Bolt will run in the UK as little as possible because he doesn't like our tax system - neither do I Usain, but taxes pay for good stuff just as much as bad stuff, and I'm afraid the super-wealthy (like you) should pay your way. Shame, but bye bye...

He is unquestionably talented in his niche but it's just one sport, one discipline. I find placing him in the category of a Jesse Owens, for instance, is like not seeing the forest from the trees.

He's the current world record holder but so were other people in their time and prime. Apples and not necessarily oranges, mon.

Certainly a great character, but the 100 mtrs is the least skillful of all the track races with no tactics, just raw power(which in itself is impressive).I also found it quite tiresome to see the trademark poses and catchphrases before each sprint.

Really?

Pancab, ex 400 Mtr runner....

I didn't think a sprint from the Drury Arms to Layer Road was quite that far.
