Football League Trophy 17:49 - Jun 10 with 4990 viewsFruitbat

16 Cat A academy sides from the Premier League to play in the FLT next season.

A devalued competition just got devalued a bit more.

Bradford had to pick their first team keeper to say witin the rules. They subbed him after two minutes. Genius.

It doesn't seem they are taking this competition seriously.

"...I'm not holding my breath though."

To be fair, I could have almost done so by the time it took for Saints to go 1-0 up.

Southampton scored after 8 minutes. That would have been an impressive fear of breath holding! Free diving anyone?

Back in the day, with preparation, 2-3 minutes was possible - too many fags since then unfortunately. Me and the kids play a game on road trips, holding your breath through long tunnels - I can still do Dartford tunnel if the traffic is flowing.

I'm quite sure I couldn't get anywhere near two minutes, probably not even one. Not that I shall be trying.

Attendance 791. Doubt the club made much of a profit from tonight.

Does this defeat justify the current set up of the competition ?
Can we judge a players performance for inclusion for forth coming league fixtures ?
Now we cannot progress, how do we approach the final fixture ?

Poll: No half measure either 1 or 2 ?

I think we should field an ineligible side for the Charlton clash.
Worst could happen is we'll be expelled from the competition !!

Meaningless game anyway!

If we field an ineligible side, in other words too many changes from the previous Saturday's team, we will get fined. I don't how much, but we will find soon, because Luton made 11 changes from the team that played last Saturday.

As for the Charlton game , I think whatever team we put out we should just take easy, and do anything to avoid any more injuries.

I think the fine for putting out an "under strength" side is £5,000. In the particular example of Luton, this is farcical. For their first game a couple of weeks ago they made 11 changes and face a fine. On Tuesday they made 11 changes and face a fine.

They won both games! How can you fine somebody for fielding a side that was good enough to beat whoever they were playing? "Yes, we know you won 2-0 but we think you should have won 4-0 so that'll be five grand please".

For our game against Charlton, don't you forfeit the game 3-0 if you don't turn up? Seems reasonable.

A farce of a competition and don't know where it will go. With that sort of attendance we must have lost money unless the FA are putting sponsorship money back to the clubs.
I thought you had to play a mininum of 5 first teamers. Wasn't aware that related back to the previous Sat.
Seems to me the people getting most benefit are the Cat 1 clubs.

Despite the low crowd, I actually enjoyed the game and don't begrudge paying my tenner to watch an entertaining match. Johnstone scored a legitimate goal (goalkeeper untouched simply dropped it) so it should have been 2-2 (and a loss on penalties ) . All credit to our under 23's that (almost) matched Saints probably overpaid; over ego'd superstars.

The alternative was a trip to Braintree, £15 admission to watch carthorse Elokobi and yet another defeat for the Iron. Crowd 533. I rest my case M'Lud.

Has a sweetener for the new format, thought winners received 10k per game .
All gate receipts to be shared, but with nationwide low attendances perhaps only fines will top up the pot .
Agree Noah , a open entertaining game which was helped by U's conceding early goal ( will they ever learn ). When level never tested the vistors keeper enough ( one decent save ) to justify a pen shootout .
Worthy winner though, took his chance well, gave Bromsgrove no chance .

Braintree are doing a lot for a little.

Oh bless, let em not be skunked 5-0 as some are predicting in the Happy Cup.

If someday our U's play, I may still applaud when the Trees score -- and then be escorted out :D ...

*big sigh* ... It's still an important trophy.
