U'sual Champions League - Groups 23:24 - Jan 1 with 2164 viewswessex_exile

Thanks to Noah for providing #9 as the randomiser, which has produced the following groups for the Round of 16 predictions:

Group A
------------------------
Wessex (4)
Ethicsgirl (8)
MrHappy (10)

Group B
------------------------
Colukev (5)
Gate16 (6)
Tropical U's (7)

Group C
------------------------
Jonestones (12)
Basher2010 (3)
Gsy163 (11)

Group D
------------------------
Burnsieespana (1)
MFB (2)
Noah4x4 (9)

The number in brackets is the rank as of close of Week 21 (soz JT, although holder, you are last by a long chalk). This probably confirms that Noah is most definitely in the Group D of Death, and without doubt the closest is Kev, Gate and Tropical in Group B.

The fixtures to predict are as follows:
Tuesday 14th February 2017
Benfica v Borussia Dortmund
Paris Saint Germain v Barcelona

Wednesday 15th February 2017
Bayern Munich v Arsenal
Real Madrid v Napoli

Tuesday 21st February 2017
Bayer 04 Leverkusen v Atlético Madrid
Manchester City v Monaco

Wednesday 22nd February 2017
FC Porto v Juventus
Sevilla v Leicester City

Tuesday 7th March 2017
Arsenal v Bayern Munich
Napoli v Real Madrid

Wednesday 8th March 2017
Barcelona v Paris Saint Germain
Borussia Dortmund v Benfica

Tuesday 14th March 2017
Juventus v FC Porto
Leicester City v Sevilla

Wednesday 15th March 2017
Atlético Madrid v Bayer 04 Leverkusen
Monaco v Manchester City

This is a straightforward mini-league round - members in each Group will play in a League of 3 for the Round of 16 matches, with the usual 3pts for a spot-on and 1pt for an outcome, and top two in each Group to go through.

As always, there will be no first-to-post tie-break decider this round, only most spot-ons. However, remember you are only allowed one exact match prediction with each one of your group members for this entire round (1st and 2nd legs together), so first to post may be a factor. If I spot too many exact matches I will do my best to give advance warning, but please don't rely on me to do this - you must watch this one yourselves too.

If at the end positions still can't be determined, the tie-break question will always be attendance at the next U's game (currently to be Crewe vs U's on 18th March).

Finally, the deadline for any game prediction is kick-off (they are all currently showing as 19:45 each day), compliance will be determined using the time a prediction is registered on this board compared to the published kick-off time.

Good luck everyone.

Okay, a quick update following completion of the first quarter of Round of 16 matches.

Group A
-------------------------
1} Ethicsgirl 1/2 5pts
2} Wessex 0/2 2pts
3} MrHappy 0/0 0pts
Ethics storms into an early lead with a sensational 5pts, including not only the Real 3-1 victory spot on tonight, but one of only 2 to get an outcome last night. I'm hanging on by her coat-tails with outcomes tonight, but Haps is yet to score.

Group B
-------------------------
=1} Colukev 0/2 2pts
=1} Gate16 0/2 2pts
=1} Tropical U's 0/2 2pts
Even-stevens, as everyone collected 2pts for the home win outcomes tonight, so still all to play for.

Group C
-------------------------
1} Basher2010 0/2 2pts
=2} Jonestones 0/1 1pts
=2} Gsy163 0/1 1pts
Likewise very close, with Basher edging it with both of the home win outcomes tonight, compared to just singletons for JT and Guerno.

Group D
-------------------------
1} MFB 1/1 4pts
2} Burnsieespana 0/3 3pts
3} Noah4x4 0/2 2pts
MFB also nails the Real Madrid result spot-on, and with the Bayern outcome as well, moves into top spot. No disgrace for Burnsie, who has scored outcomes in three of the four matches (including the only other to get a point last night), but Noah (in his Group of Death) is still comfortably in touch with both outcomes tonight.

All good Noah - you have one exact match with Burnsie, but that's permissible.

At the half-way point of the Round of 16, here's how things stand.

Group A
------------------------------
1} Ethicsgirl 2/5 11pts
2} Wessex 0/6 6pts
3} MrHappy 0/2 2pts
Ethics maintains her sensational form from last week with 3 more outcomes and the FC Porto result spot-on, to dominate the group with an impressive 11pts. Yours truly hits four outcomes out of four this week to keep ahead of Mr Happy, who opens his account with two outcomes to remain in touch going into the 2nd legs.

Group B
------------------------------
=1} Colukev 1/5 8pts
=1} Gate16 1/5 8pts
3} Tropical U's 0/5 5pts
This group continues to be keenly contested, with all players hitting five outcomes from the 1st legs. The differentiator is that Kev (Sevilla v Leicester City) and Gate (FC Porto v Juventus) have also found one spot-on result as well, to leave them joint top of the group with 8pts, with Tropical not very far behind with 5pts.

Group C
------------------------------
=1} Basher2010 0/4 4pts
=1} Gsy163 0/4 4pts
3} Jonestones 0/2 2pts
Fairly slim pickings for this group, with no spot-ons so far, just a modest scattering of outcomes. However, this does make for a very close group at the midpoint stage, with Basher and Guerno joint top on 4pts, and JT very close behind on 2pts.

Group D
------------------------------
1} MFB 1/5 8pts
2} Burnsieespana 0/6 6pts
3} Noah4x4 0/4 4pts
This group is going very much to form at the moment, with the two PL giants MFB and Burnsie bashing lumps out of each other at the top of the group, with MFB slightly extending his lead with four outcomes this week to Burnsie's three. However, Noah keeps himself in contention for qualification with two more outcomes of his on.

There are a few yet to predict the 2nd leg matches (starting on 7th March), including Tropical in Group B (no exact matches so far), JT in Group C (one exact match with Basher so far), and MFB in Group D. MFB has already had both of his permissible exact matches, so following Noah's tactical decision to get in early, must now pick a path through all 8 games without matching any of his fellow group members - will this be significant constraint?

Good luck all - I will try and bump at some point as a reminder, but do keep an eye on the calendar just in case.

I decided my only hope of making progress might be MFB suffering disqualification for multiple picks or he being limited to less likely results. Cunning mind games and tactics being played eh? Who said this is competition is all about pin-sticking....

Apologies JT, this is my first chance to check, and your Napoli 1 Real 1 prediction for this evening is your 2nd exact match with Basher - I hope you have time to amend, as anything else will do.

A quick update:

Group A
--------------------------
1} Ethicsgirl 3/5 14pts
2} Wessex 0/7 7pts
3} MrHappy 0/4 4pts
With yet another spot-on ( Napoli v Real) Ethics maintains her domination of Group A with 14pts. Yours truly, at one point tonight with two spot-ons, ends up with just the one outcome for 7pts, which boosts Happy's qualification chances with his two outcomes tonight on 4pts to keep in touch.

Group B
--------------------------
1} Gate16 2/5 11pts
2} Colukev 1/7 10pts
3} Tropical U's 0/5 5pts
Nip and tuck at the top in Group B, with Gate getting the Napoli v Real result spot-on (for 11pts), but Kev keeping in touch with both tonight's outcomes (10pts). Tropical lucks out with no points tonight to leave him a mountain to climb (on 5pts).

Group C
--------------------------
=1} Basher2010 0/5 5pts
=1} Gsy163 0/5 5pts
3} Jonestones 0/2 2pts
Basher and Guerno both get an outcome each to maintain their position in the qualification slots (with 5pts each). It's probably small consolation that JT's double-match with Basher's Napoli 1 Real Madrid 1 prediction wouldn't have counted, but it still leaves him on a double-blank 2pts tonight.

Group D
--------------------------
1} MFB 1/7 10pts
=2} Burnsieespana 0/6 6pts
=2} Noah4x4 0/6 6pts
MFB picks up both outcomes tonight to consolidate his position at the top of the group with 10pts. However, Burnsie's double blank, and Noah's double outcome brings significant focus on the qualification in second spot, with both on 6pts.

It will come as no surprise that there were no spot-on results last night, following two fairly remarkable games. However, it was almost a clean sweep of two outcomes (and 2pts) for everyone, though Noah gambled on the Dortmund v Benfica game being a draw, to slip a solitary point behind Burnsie in the Group D battle for qualification.

Group A
----------------------------
1} Ethicsgirl 3/7 16pts
2} Wessex 0/9 9pts
3} Mr Happy 0/6 6pts

In addition to the small matter of the U's getting their play-off challenge back on track at WHCS, we have the final four games of the U'sual Champions League Group of 16 tonight and tomorrow night.

Just as reminder, the top two in each group will qualify, forming 2 mini-leagues of 4, and play off against each other predicting all of the Quarter-final Champions League matches. Groups will be formed as follows:

Group 1
Winner A;
Runner-Up B;
Winner C; and
Runner-up D

Group 2
Runner-up A;
Winner B;
Runner-up C; and
Winner D

If a tie-break is required to determine qualifiers and/or final positions, it will be an attendance prediction for the Crewe v Colchester United match this coming Saturday 18th March.

I am due out of the office in less than half an hour, so here's a quick update on the final placings for the Group of 16 qualifications.

Group A
----------------------
1} Ethicsgirl 4/8 20pts
2} Wessex 0/10 10pts
3} Mr Happy 0/9 9pts
A tremendous performance by Ethics sees her so far ahead as first place qualifier that she could easily afford the luxury of a double-zero last night. Yours truly scraped over the line as runner-up, despite a spirited fight back from Mr Happy to close the gap to just one point (and scoring in 7 of the 8 second leg matches).

Group B
----------------------
1} Gate16 3/8 17pts
2} Colukev 1/10 13pts
3} Tropical U's 0/9 9pts
No points for anyone last night means Gate finishes as winner of Group B with a very commendable 17pts, with Kev holding on to second place ahead of Tropical.

Group C
----------------------
1} Gsy163 1/8 11pts
2} Jonestones 1/6 9pts
3} Basher2010 0/8 8pts
Without doubt the closest of the groups, with some particularly impressive scoring from all this week. Guerno holds on to top spot with a spot-on and outcome on Tuesday, and at the death JT nicks second place ahead of Basher with his late late outcome for the Monaco home win.

Group D
----------------------
1} MFB 3/9 18pts
2} Burnsieespana 0/11 11pts
3} Noah4x4 0/9 9pts
Alongside Ethics and Gate, the other stand-out performance of this stage was definitely MFB, who dominated the group from the off and finishes with 18pts. Going into this week Noah was well-positioned to put some pressure on Burnsie, but Burnsie's three outcomes this week (compared to Noah's two), confirms his qualification as runner-up.

So, congratulations to the qualifiers, and heartfelt commiserations to those who progress no further. The groups for the next stage are below - more details regarding fixtures etc. to follow in due course.

Group 1
Ethicsgirl
Colukev
Gsy163
Burnsieespana

Group 2
