Super Sam 18:16 - Jan 14 with 997 viewsgerry_us

...is seven foot tall.
A foot for each goal he has conceded in the past two games. Serious times but do we have a realistic alternative; the only option being the goalkeeping coach!!!

If goalkeeping was the issue as regards the U's leaking goals I would not be too worried . Coach and back up Gilmartin has looked great in Essex Senior Cup and similar fixtures. It is the basic defending in front of Big Sam that is the First Team issue. But Innis, Prosser and Eastman together might remedy that. Maybe Kent can be developed in another position, but is (IMHO) not brutal enough to stop Division Two thugs like Akenfenwa.

Sam has improved from past seasons under Gilmartin's tutelage. He is now more dominant in his area and throwing and kicking hugely improved. Has always been a decent shot stopper, but he was previously poor as regards these attributes.

Agree with Noah. Had anyone have had the balls to nominate a MOTM for the Cheltenham debacle it would almost certainly have been Walker. Not his fault management and/or defenders have slipped up recently.

Gerry has always made the relevant point that Big Sam fails to command the six yard box.

Yesterday you could argue that Sam should have saved the beasts header, but the second was an awful deflection and the third an impressive strike.

I suppose that Colchester supporters could say that we have seen this scenario countless times.

We start the season poorly then turn things around get everyone excited about the chance of promotion and then revert to type by blowing up big style with some very poor performances and results.

The next three games will either make or break our season. The Mariners are next up, defeat is unthinkable.

Walker does not command his area like he should being 6ft whatever tall and leaves it mainly to his defender then berates them when things go wrong. Known fact that tall goalies are supposedly good at dealing with high ball into the area but are slow on getting down to the low ones...
Nought out of two isn't good!
OK, so I see a few away games only per year but I have yet to see him have a good game. Admittedly his ground kicking clearances have improved but they started at a very low level.

Nothing Sam could have done about any of the goals yesterday. The first was down to a lack of concentration when they took the quick throw-in, a quality cross whipped in with pace, and our defence losing the beast and letting him get goal-side for a virtually point blank stooping header.

Totally agree with Wessex. Kent should have reacted faster and put his boot through the ball. Akinfenwa might still have scored, but would still be at the dentist today. Walker had no chance.

Disagree with Gerry-US. It was a weakness, but Walker has dramatically improved his command of the area.
