Happy League 2018/19 Week 1 (of 38) - Deadline Saturday 11th August 15.00 21:43 - Jul 5 with 5742 viewsmfb_cufc

A warm welcome to all members old and new, as the Happy League is about to start its 16th season.

First of all thank you everybody for your kind comments regarding my administrating of the Happy League, they are very much appreciated. In return I would like to thank you all for taking part in what was a cracking 2017/18 season. Lets hope this season will be just as good.

There is no need to register for the coming season, as any member who took part last season, will automatically be registered for this season. Just post your predictions to confirm your registration.

If anybody is wanting to drop out, could you please let me know, either on this thread, or by sending me a PM. For any new members thinking about joining, it is a free to enter competition with prizes. You can join just by posting you predictions for Week 1 on this thread. The four competitions are:-

The Happy League There are two divisions, with twelve members in the Premier, and all other members (including newcomers) in Division One. Three to be relegated from the Premier, and three to be promoted from Division One (the top two automatically, and one from the play-offs).
The season will start on August 11th, and will run for 38 weeks (280 games). Fixtures will be the usual Pick 6, with a guest Pick 10 every three weeks (the first one to be Week 4). There will also be a Pick 10 on Week 38, to finish the season, selected by myself. The two leagues as they stand at the moment (in alphabetical order) are:-

The Happy Cup This will start as a league format, with four groups playing 30 games. These will be ten fixtures from each of the FA Cup 1st, 2nd and 3rd rounds. The top two from each group will qualify for the quarter-finals, where it will become a knockout tournament. There will be more details on this competition in a separate thread later.

The Champions League The qualification for this competition will be decided on December 29th (Week 21). With BFG qualifying automatically, as last seasons winner, the other eleven qualifiers will be the highest point scorers over the two divisions on the aforementioned date. The competition will start on February 12th, when the Champions League knockout stage begins. Again there will be more details on this competition on a separate thread at a later date, to be administrated by wessex_exile.

Charity Shield This is an end of season competition for the top three in the Premier, and the Happy Cup winner. If the Happy Cup winner finishes in the top three of the Premier, then the Happy Cup runner-up will qualify. The Premier winner will play the Happy Cup winner, and the Premier 2nd and 3rd will play each other in the other semi-final.

The Division One play-offs will be between the members who finish 3rd to 6th. With 3rd playing 6th, and 4th playing 5th in the semi-finals.

A reminder of a rule, mainly for any newcomers. That is anybody failing to post their predictions four weeks in a row, will be dismissed from all Happy League competitions. There is no need for this to happen. If you are not going to be around to post your predictions any week, just let me know in advance what default score you require, e.g. all 1-0's, 2-1's etc. Anybody failing to post anything at all will receive no points for that week. Thinking of posting a default score, here are the top 12 results from the 300 games played in total last season:-

1-0...36 (12%) The third time in the last four seasons this score has been best for a home win.
1-1...32 (10.67%) Has to settle for the runner-up spot, after being top the previous three seasons.
2-1...30 (10%) The favourite for a default score, but 1-0 has proved to be better overall.
0-0...25 (8.33%) A good return for this score, but rarely predicted.
0-1...25 (8.33%) Top for an away win last season, but never chosen as a default.
2-0...24 (8%)
1-2...20 (6.67%)
2-2...15 (5%)
3-1...14 (4.67%)
0-2...12 (4%) Another mediocre return for a popular prediction.
1-3...11 (3.67%)
4-1...11 (3.67%) Surprise to find this score in the top 12. More of these last season than the previous three seasons put together.

I think Arthur_wessex_exile sounds good. Or should it be King Arthur of Wessex.

Wessex Exile's attempt at claiming alphabetical precedence to a leadership position (e.g...."Aaaah Wessex") is not without precedence. But this particular attempt at West Saxon upsurtion has been rumbled by the suggestion that he might be Arthur (Pendragon) whom was notably fictitious and also has zero links with 'Wessex'......I digress....

King Aescwine of Wessex (674 -676) should take current alphabetical precedence. But his ascent to the Wessex monarchy does have distinct similarities as eleven of the previous twelve Wessex kings had the initial C (e.g. kings Cerdic, Cynric, Ceawlin, Ceol, Ceolwulf, Cynegils, Cwichelm, Cenwah, Centwine, Cenwalh). But the upsurtion was short lived as after Aescwine then came Centwine (again!) and Caedwalla and Cenfus after a brief loss of control to Seaxburh. The C's dominated for a century during which the turnover of Wessex management had outstripped that of Chelsea in modern times.

After six further kings of Wessex in the next century, all of neglible fame , the sequence from 839 to 899 then runs Athelwulf; Athelbald; Athelbert; Athelred; then Alfred the Great suggesting the A's have already had their period of success. If we ignore Edward the Elder; we again recommence with Alfweard then finally Athelstan (924 - 927) who was ultimately the first King of England and the end of the Wessex dynasty.....

Thank you brother Wessex. It's taken 50 years for this knowledge to become remotely useful. Forced learning of the names of the Kings of Wessex was a veritable punishment far more useless than any of the normal versions of 1,000 lines. George Potter, history, economics and master of innovative punishments... RIP.

Dreaming. I beat him in five Haps. Tough opponent, took me a lot of guile.

But it might be the last time given his rate of improvement! He also needs to stay in Division Two (his team got relegated). He is too good for Division three, so hopefully they will push him up a team (he could play for us if not).

Welcome ghughes11, and good luck, in what burnsieespana has said, is going to be a competitive Div. 1. I have four workmates showing an interest in joining, so we could be heading for record numbers this season.
