Happy League 2020/21 Week 19 (of 34) - Deadline Saturday 16th January 12.30 23:07 - Jan 9 with 1709 viewsmfb_cufc

Week 18 Results

CHORLEY 2 DERBY COUNTY 0

Chorley beat the Derby youth team in a competition that use to mean something. Well done to Lewis_1 for being the only one to get this spot-on, and 5 more had the outcome.

LINCOLN CITY 1 PETERBOROUGH UNITED 1
Jorge Grant missed a penalty for leaders Lincoln as they had to settle for a draw against 10-man Peterborough. Just the 2 had this spot-on, and only 1 got the outcome. 17 predicted a win for Lincoln, with 12 going for a 2-1 in what was the weeks most predicted score.

GILLINGHAM 0 BURTON ALBION 1
Debutant Hayden Carter scored the winner as Burton picked up their first victory under returning manager Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink. Nobody got this spot-on, and only gsy163 had the outcome. 24 predicted a win for Gillingham.

IPSWICH TOWN 2 SWINDON TOWN 3
Relegation-threatened Swindon stunned promotion-seeking Ipswich with this victory. Nobody had this spot-on, but 4 did get the outcome. 22 predicted a win for Ipswich.

WIGAN ATHLETIC v HULL CITY POSTPONED Due to Wigan players testing positive for Covid-19

CAMBRIDGE UNITED 2 HARROGATE TOWN 1
Cambridge climbed into the top three in League Two as they came from behind to beat 10-man Harrogate. A great 8 got this spot-on, and a further 17 had the outcome.

CARLISLE UNITED v LEYTON ORIENT POSTPONED Due to a frozen pitch

PORT VALE 3 GRIMSBY TOWN 0
Managerless Port Vale eased to an easy win after two early goals. Well done to GOSBTS for being the only one to have this spot-on, and another 19 got the outcome.

SCUNTHORPE UNITED v BRADFORD CITY POSTPONED Due to a frozen pitch

SOUTHEND UNITED 1 BARROW 0
On-loan Portsmouth forward Reeco Hackett-Fairchildired, someone who the U's were rumoured to be interested in from the last transfer window, scored the only goal of the game on his debut, after just three minutes. Southend held on after having ex-U's Greg Halford sent off. A magnificent 7 got this spot-on, and a further 7 had the outcome.

Predicting the result of football matches can be difficult at the best of times, but in the present climate it is being made impossible. I know this virus is causing havoc with football, and everything is being done to get games played, but what protocol is used to decide if a game should be played. Is it up the EFL or the clubs if a game should take place? Because recently just one or two players who test positive for Covid-19 has been enough to get a game cancelled, and then you hear a club like Man City have got a number of positive cases, but they still play. As for the FA they have different rules altogether, that has lead to their prestige competition having clubs farcically playing virtual youth teams. I apologise for having the Chorley v Derby game in this weeks fixtures. If I had known it was going to be a joke game I might as well put a local Sunday League game to predict, if only the were allowed to play at the moment.
A mixture of the virus and the weather means we lost another three games this week. Of the seven that survived it was a split between League 1 producing shock results, and League 2 recovering the week, to such an extent that the total 19 spot-ons gave us an okay week after all. Four members did well to get two 3 pointers, the best of which came from RSCOSWORTH who had the Lincoln 1-1 and the Cambridge 2-1, and Lewis_1 who also got the Cambridge 2-1 to go with the good Chorley 2-0 pick. They both also had two outcomes to give them a share of being the weeks top scorer with a very decent 8 points. Best of those to have one 3 pointer was gsy163, who had the Lincoln 1-1 and four outcomes to give him a decent 7 points.
Week 19 will now be a 13 game week to make up for the postponed matches this week.

In the Premier Having the Southend 1-0 spot-on helped sevebalo to increase his lead by a point. The other Charity Shield spots are still held by mfb_cufc and thrillseeker, as they both had the Cambridge 2-1 spot-on. Back up a place into fourth is Sector4, thanks to getting the Southend 1-0 spot-on. Current champ noah4x4 was another to benefit from having the Southend 1-0 spot-on, and he continued his recent progress by moving up a couple of places, and into the top half for the first time since Week 12. At the bottom, two 3 pointers for Tropical_Us, the wins for Cambridge and Southend, only keeps him in the relegation zone by virtue of the most 3 pointer rule. The top scoring performance from RSCOSWORTH was enough to take him off the bottom for the first time since Week 1.

In Division One Having the Southend 1-0 spot-on enabled concordman to increase his lead by a point. Four outcomes keep ghughes11 in the other automatic spot, and he also increases his position by a point. The only other member to get a 3 pointer, in a top six that remains the same as last week, was durham_exile, who had the Cambridge 2-1. Another to benefit from that Cambridge win was blueeagle, and he is now within a point of the play-offs. After getting a decent 8 points for the second week running, Lewis_1 moves up a place, and puts him right in contention for a play-off spot. The other member to get two 3 pointers this week was GOSBTS, the Cambridge 2-1 to go with his good Port Vale 3-0 pick. That gives him a 3 pointer total that should have him in at least a play-off spot. Just a pity he hasn't got an outcome record to match..

THE TABLES (141 out of 280 played)
(Tie-breaker: Most 3 pointers, and then the first to post)

At the current rate won't be late by before we have to predict every fixture. As a matter if interest Mick can you say what the highest number of fixtures having to be predicted has ever been?

Last season we had a number of 15 game weeks at the end of the season, so we could get the season finished on time. The highest before that is a 12 game one in Week 13 last season. The weeks should never get too big because there are alternate 6 and 10 game weeks. But if the current rate of postponed games get worse, it is possible the 15 game week could be beat.

As a former resident of said borough (exiled in 1976) can I please highlight that it is West BromWich Albion. Has a silent W, like the silent P in Psychology (or if desperate in St Botophs Car Park). My propensity to compulsive obsessive behaviour wants to edit all posts to add said W whenever the Baggies feature in the Happy League.

Saw my first ever Football League game at the Hawthorns aged 11. On a Saturday morning would help my next door neighbour finish his bread delivery round early in time to make the game. Not easy in a 20MPH electric truck; and was the fittest I have ever been running 50 metres up long pathways with each loaf. but was a handy occupation as he could park his car in the Sunblest Bakery directly opposite the Brummie Road End. Then I discovered I was good at Rugby which occupied my Saturdays for a decade until injury rekindled my love of soccer, but not in the Throstle loving west of the city. Took another 25 years of upheaval to find the U's.

You mentioned your support, following of West BromWich Albion. I have been curious about the banner they have displayed at the Hawthorns since the games have been crowd less. The banner states "The Lord is My Shepherd" I was wondering if you or anyone on this board can give any insight to this banner. I think it is great but does seem a tad out of place.
