I know the general opinion is that Steve Cook will leave at the end of season but today walking back to the car I heard his name mentioned as many times as Madsen and Kone in a massively positive light. Have to say the whole back 4 looked stronger without the madness at RB.

Van Dyke is the same age as Steve Cook and still near the top of his game, Cook’s reading of the game is brilliant and we have another captain on the pitch.

Wonder whether the extension also had a number of games played rollover. I know I am in the minority but I would keep him, I’ve also been to enough away games to know his standards don’t drop

Totally agree; that man is a rock.

Not sure you are in the minority at all. No real injury issues and absolutely still a strong player at this level. Salary may be the only issue but he's been great and I only wish we had got hold of him the first time we went after him.

I remember a few posters stating his legs had gone at the beginning of the season.
Looks like he went and found 'em again.

Pleased to see him right at the heart of things and showing his class.

Has been a great addition to our squad over the past few seasons.

Certainly playing well for a man whose legs have gone.

Experience, availability, know-how, leadership. He has a lot of things you simply can't buy and will always struggle to replace. See also, Sam Field

He’s been terrific for us, the outstanding success of Ainsworth’s time here. (I realise he doesn’t play for nothing!)

Fascinating to observe the one or two here who've done a volte face in recent months on Cook's capabilities. He'll be 35 in April. Richard Dunne did a sterling job for the club at a similar age, as did, in another era, Frank McLintock.

I'd like to know how Steve might be feeling. If he genuinely believes he can carry on for another year after this one, the coaching staff agree, and the contract is sensible, I'd give it him right now, even if he's a squad player.

Poll: A little over halfway through the season, where do you see us finishing?

Cooky Monster on 23:35 - Jan 31 with 1326 viewsJevlar

I think he’s been superb. And has dealt with no longer being the captain by being a great leader on the pitch.

Cooky Monster on 23:50 - Jan 31 with 1232 viewsbosh67

Back to his best. We lose him at our own peril. I had the same foot injury he had and it took ages, but he seems to have shaken it off. 35 in a few months and still very comfortable at this level. 91 games for the club. If he keeps playing like this then def another season in him.

Never knowingly right.

Common sense defending. Always a reassuring presence for me.

Woke up to this thread this morning and so pleased it as been posted. Totally agree with SE... the club has an history of these "mature gems" at CB.... and Cooky is certainly one of them

He must be 3rd behind Dunne and Madsen for appearances and minutes this season and I have yet to see him have a bad game.

With the captaincy taken from him this season, it would seem that he wasn't really in the plans, but how he as handled that, and still given the level of performance, professionalism and dedication is amazing ....

IMO he is arguably the most influential player in the team

I think he's happier with Walsh behind him, he's not having to defend under his own crossbar.
He was great today, as was the whole defence.
Nice to see some good ol' fashioned reducers go in on Rudoni, as well.

Poll: Do we need another Eze thread

So agree. I think to be fair lots of us stood behind him when some thought that his foot injury couldn't be recovered from or that his "legs had gone" after a couple of average games.

He has been a fantastic signing for us yet so constantly underrated and underappreciated, no idea why. The thought that a new signing like Mad Mbengue should replace him, or that JCS should shove him out for his occasional honoured-to-see-you appearances always riled me.

What we also need to add in to the pot that this club he is serving so well is the same one that has taken the captaincy from him AND done his best to publicly humiliate him with one of the most mealy-mouthed contract renewal statements I have ever seen.

Cracking professional, always liked him. Sign him up with a long REDACTED contract, he will still be more reliable than the youngsters even at 38.

Whilst I agree with most of your post and also think Cook has been a superb signing I take exception to this paragraph:

“What we also need to add in to the pot that this club he is serving so well is the same one that has taken the captaincy from him AND done his best to publicly humiliate him with one of the most mealy-mouthed contract renewal statements I have ever seen”

Nobody is guaranteed to be captain for life and there could’ve been multiple reasons why Dunne was preferred for this season rather than your perceived slight on Cook. Also Cook had been captain on and off at his previous clubs so he’ll now how it works better than us. And the contract extension statement was short and to the point which may have raised a few eyebrows but hardly an attempt to ‘publicly humiliate’ Cook who I’m sure was happy to stay on at QPR for this season when he may have had other options elsewhere.

Well if you had agreed with everything Ned, I would have fainted in shock :-)

Just gone back to reread it to make sure I wasn't exaggerating the memory - it was indeed the first line:

"STEVE Cook is to remain with QPR after an extension clause was triggered in the defender’s contract."

Which, of course, was written more like what WLS would write on reporting it. Wouldn't have taken much to be like our other contract extension releases and state that "QPR are delighted to announce an extension to Steve Cook's contract" or some such.

And, of course, the Nourry quote was dripping with disclaimers:

"CEO Christian Nourry said: “Steve’s savviness and know-how were vital to the club securing its Championship status in the 2023/24 campaign – while his wealth of experience further helped the playing group in 2024/25 during the more difficult moments of the season.

“Although Steve’s campaign was curtailed by his plantar fasciitis, which he continues to recover from, we are pleased to have the opportunity to work together in 2025/26.”

We all debated it at the time, but for the club's very own PR machine to write such a release - if I was as experienced as Cook I would have been apoplectic.

He, however, is clearly a bigger and better man than me!

Cookies been terrific at the back partnering Jimmy. And at 35 too! I too thought he was going to be in and out with the foot injury from last season but he’s come through it in style. Wages will be the big issue I think. If that can be sorted it will be a tough conversation.

I think we need to move on though. Those wages could give us two other players easily. We need to look to the future and get Jimmy and Ronnie paired up equally successfully.

PS Cookie is one of my favourites so will be gutted to see him move on. True pro and bloody good player.

He had a fantastic match yesterday. Reads the game so well, which helps mitigate any loss of pace. I don't think we will re-sign him because of his wage but he's a big loss playing like that. I assume the plan is for Jimmy and Ronnie to play together. Even the club must realise JC-S is basically semi-retired now.

Someone will be along soon to say that we should keep him on the coaching staff and for him to do his badges.

He got his contract extension and at the end of the season it's farewell
Next CB already lined up hopefully

A video I saw on Twitter taken from the Coventry end yesterday explains why an opinion I have long held is that Cook should not be our Captain and Dunne is an excellent candidate,

We conceded a goal yesterday to a worldie of a cross, should Walsh have come? was it Edwards man? was it Bennie's man? in reality it was just quality piece of play and no-one was at fault,

Cook as his way, immediately starts looking for a scape-goat, throwing his arms up in the air, angrily gesticulating at others, something he's done since Day 1 at our club, be it his mistake or Ossie Kakay's, who-ever, Cook always plays the blame game,

Dunne by comparison is a team player and a QPR man in a way Cook is not, hence getting Madsen & other overseas players out for coffee & / or a few beers in Chiswick regularly, something crucial in helping us get the best out of these players,

Cook's playing well for sure, Dunne is a better Captain.

Extraordinary criticism of Cook based on a couple of gesticulations. I love Dunne and think he's a great captain, but I will never understand why some Rangers fans are so quick to criticise Cook any opportunity they can get.

Cook doesn't use social media the same way as Jimmy, so unless you have inside knowledge maybe Cook was hosting team building soirees all through his captaincy?

If he plays the rest of the season and is willing to take a pay cut, then we should offer another 1-year deal.

But remember this blocks Morrison from progressing, so at some point you have to develop the kids.
