A legend.
How many players start with a hundred in there first test against India and end with a hundred in there final in innings?
Essex will benefit hugely over the next three years so hopefully we don't get relegated this year.
England will be a lot poorer for not having Cook open.

Spent the day at Trent Bridge and the only Essex batsman to perform was Murali Vijay, just signed for three matches. We bowled Notts out for 177 and should have been out of sight by stumps but have managed to make a game of it with some pretty ordinary batting from the top order VJ being the exception. Cookie will certainly bring his own form of stability to the team and England's loss is our considerable gain. Now the guys need to knuckle down and do the business till the end of the season so Cookie doesn't have to languish in the second tier next year. He certainly does not deserve that and could it even make him think of reversing his decision?
Three more years to watch him perform for Essex. Magic!

Very much doubt Essex will be the recipients of three years of Cook. He has many other fish to fry and Ed Smith has a few ideas too. Read Agnew for a fuller appreciation of just who Cook is. I hope Essex get a season or two at any rate.

Alistair Cook (MBE) won't leave Essex. Remember he has a local farm and close family in Maldon etc. Perhaps time for a knighthood or at least the 'Freedom of Essex'? Should never need to buy his own beer again. Challenging quiz question;

Who was the last English man knighted for services to cricket?

Everybody will inevitably say Ian Botham, but that is wrong.

Answer;
Sir Alec Victor Bedser CBE (1918—2010), knighted for services to cricket in 1996.
Ian Botham was instead knighted for services to charity.

'Sir' Alistair Cook will probably get one for his inevitable future appearance on Strictly Come Dancing given that has he has retired young enough and still has enough hair to attract a populist female vote. Or will he take up a permanent position on a new panel show on Quest? Has the 'media' talent to do something else entertaining other than with a bat.

Cook been hugely missed by Essex when on International duty. Vijay is clearly an emergency signing to bolster the opening position, whilst yesterday, the Second XI versus Middlesex (Friendly) opened with Paul Walter (bowled third ball) and Will Buttleman (scored two); and were 2-1 when #3 Aaron Beard fell for a duck; and all out 127 thanks only to a 50 from youngster Feroze Kushi (n.b. one to watch) with eight Essex 2nd XI batsmen not reaching double figures. Essex deperately need Cook back to give us a bit more depth at the top of the First XI (and hence also Second XI) top order.

But putting a bet on Colchester's 16 year old opener Joe MacGregor (was Captain Essex U15's) eventually playing for England is perhaps worth a punt. Joe (who was only 16 in August, so very young for his age group) scored six consecutive 50's (converted two into hundreds) in the final six games of the Essex League season hence topping 1,000 runs in a season where Colchester disappointingly just missed promotion back to the Premier Division by virtue of securing one too few wins. But with 2018 cricket now over for me I have the freedom to follow the U's once again home and away until May. Prepare for the usual slump in results as soon as I get on the road. ....

He has signed a new three year contract.

Looking at the table we badly need a win and with Surrey still to play looks a tough ask particulaly if we have a decent target to chase against Notts. Our batting has been woeful this year.
Hopefully we can get the win we need against Worcs but for some reason we never seem to perform against them.

I was at the Oval on Friday so was lucky enough to see Cook walk out for his penultimate test inning. Wish I’d been there for the rest of the match.

After the finish today James Anderson was full of praise for Cook’s mental attitude, preparation and professionalism. He is certainly a role model for younger players and it will be a very long time before England have an opener with qualities. They now need to find two!

England’s loss will, I hope, be Essex’s gain.

Poll: Safe standing at football; yes, know or don't know?

Indeed he has John but Agnew was explaining on TMS that he has the right to walk away as he put it if 'the scores don't keep racking up' and in consequence his desire falters.
Obviously from an Essex point of view it would be good if he retained a hunger from the runs he scores.

Does Murali Vejay play football as well? An excellent short term signing by Essex. His ton virtually confirms Essex in top league next year. VJ and Chef could make a tremendous opening partnership.

Indeed they would but be a bit tough on Brownie.
Good win though today.

I don't think what happens to Brown is the issue. Essex need at least three quality openers to offer depth and Nick would be one of that trio. Essex has a couple of others that can do the job in white ball cricket, but in the long form of the game, Nick Brown is a vital squad member. The issue if we signed Vijay is what do we then do about bowling?

A county can play two overseas players in T20, but only one in County Championship or One Day Cup. If Essex were to play Vijay, that means it is then restricted as regards overseas bowlers and that means sacrificing Aussie fast bowler Peter Siddle. Matt Dixon would also be ineligible when Vijay plays. Fortunately, South African Simon Harmer is registered under Kolpak. That is why he could play against Notts, but what happens to Kolpak post Brexit is anybody's guess.

Therefore, an Essex problem is its current dependence on overseas bowlers, albeit home grown Jamie Porter and Sam Cook have been excellent. But bowlers are so prone to injury we do need depth. In summary, temporary overseas batting talent is a great opportunity to compensate for top order batting absence (like when Cook is on Test duty), but if Vijay became a more permanent signing that does means sacrificing a bowler, which on typical Essex wickets is perhaps the least desirable option.

Matt Dixon is leaving. Browne would make an ideal #3 which would give our batting line up a stability it needs. Just look at the batting points we "haven't" won this year.

Matt Dixon leaving but as we have given Siddle a two year deal suspect that is a pointer in how the club is thinking.
