Colchester to win the league... nailed on certainty IMHO. 09:34 - Aug 25 with 1513 viewsnoah4x4

After defeating Shenfield yesterday, Colchester & East Essex CC move within touching distance of the Division One title and promotion. A single draw or decent batting points from their last two games should seal it.

Yesterday, for Shenfield, former England bowler Monty Panesar bowled 16 overs taking 2 -72 whilst (17 year old) Colchester youngsters Joe McGregor scored 40 off 47 balls and Guy Haines 67 off 77 balls. Monty's England record is 76 matches taking 191 wickets; whilst he took an overall 709 First Class wickets. That statistic illustates the quality of our defiant developing young talent at Castle Park (n.b. Joe MacGregor is now featuring for Essex II's).

On Bank Holiday Monday (at Halstead CC) the Colchester Sunday First XI compete in the finals of the NECL T20, whilst the Under 19 XI is simultaneously featuring at the CloudFM County Ground contesting the Essex League's U19 T20 Final versus Saffron Walden U19.

Then, the First XI is away next Saturday (versus Woodford Wells) and then home to Upminster on 7th September. Essex Division One Matches start at 12:30 and typically don't end until until around 19:30. So there is one further opportunity for you to watch the likely Champions at Castle Park, before and after the U's v Walsall game. Free admision.

A depleted Sunday XI failed to get beyond the semi-final of the NECL T20 cup today. However, the Colchester & East Essex Cricket Club under 19s secured the first silverware of the season when winning the Essex League U19 cup at the CloudFM County Ground. It's rather unfortunate that the two finals clash on the same day.

Now is the time for the young batters to stake a claim, with 100 county pros heading for the 16.4, places will be available in second elevens .
Question Noah, why are ColEE not a nailed on EPL side, is it down to money ?

Monty was on Breakfast TV waxing lyrical regards England's excellent third test win, until he starting quoting his website page and hits received .

Poll: No half measure either 1 or 2 ?

The Essex Premier League is highly competitive and full of high quality cricketers. Colchester & EE slipped out of it a few seasons ago and have since been rebuilding, narrowly missing out on promotion in the last two seasons. But promotion does look certain and our exceptionally young squad is full of Essex age group and some with Essex II's experience. The recent cup win over Premier Division Chingford and the first XI win record in Division One suggests the time is right to rejoin the big boys. Squad depth is good; example Guy Haines stepped up from the Seconds and hit a fine 50. Monty eventually did bowl him, but the youngster wasn't phased by his reputation.

Money is a motivator with some players, but it's interesting to note that many clubs with high profile players are not getting the expected results. How long "sponsors" are prepared to make such payments is an interesting question. I can't imagine bar takings are enough at most clubs!

Yesterday, six bonus points from a draw was suffice for Colchester & East Essex Cricket Club to seal both promotion and the Division One Championship with a game to spare. So, they go back into the SNEL Essex Premier Division. Abysmal performance though with bat and ball. Had to block out the last five overs nine wickets down!

(Note, I stream all Saturday First XI games live to these ECB Play Cricket pages).. Just select the relevant match).

Today, the Sunday First XI visit Clacton where a win will seal the title in the North Essex Cricket League. If so, it will be a superb treble of silverware, the U19s having won the T20 competition in the SNEL age groups.

Next Saturday, First XI versus Upminster at home. Why not come down for a beer after the Walsall game and celebrate with Champions!

What an end to the season at Castle Park!

Upminster set Colchester a target of 252 to win in the remaining 45 overs.

In reply.....
Opener Joe MacGregor 118 not out in 114 balls (age 17 + one month)
Opener Julian Russell 129 not out in 108 balls
Partnership 253 in 37 overs.
Possibly the highest first wicket stand in the UK (awaiting other results)

Colchester & East Essex win by 10 wickets
Colchester & East Essex return to the Premier Division as Champions!

Video highlights at http://colchesteree.play-cricket.com/website/results/3886844 (visit Match Centre).

See you all at Forest Green (and Saturdays thereafter except 21/09 for T20 Finals).

What price a C & EE, Essex CCC and Colchester United treble/quadruple (Essex to also win County Championship)? Shame Joe MacGregor isn't a goal scorer!
