Lovely village. I grew up in Lamphey and even though work took me away to England some years back, I still have the family home there, where I spent last week. I'm retired now but still have a child in education so can't fully move back to Lamphey just yet.

Haaland 58 mins played 5 goals 😳
at 23:01 27 Feb 2024

Nearly as impressive as Denis Law.

There was a popular quiz question when I was kid ... who scored six goals in a game and ended up on the losing side?

Coincidentally, it was also the FA Cup and it was Luton losing 2-6 at home to Man City when the game was abandoned on 69 mins, with Law having scored all six

Luton won the re-arranged fixture 3-1 and Law scored the City goal.

I remember the incredible 1970 World Cup semi-final against Italy where he played for 50 minutes with his arm in a sling after dislocating his shoulder because the Germans had already used both of their subs.
He was driving the German team in that tournament, even though Seeler was captain.

That's London's older brother, jack Jr, trying to deck everyone in the ring, himself a good domestic level light-heavyweight. The rotund balding chap is London's father, former British heavyweight champion, Jack London.
London's son-in-law, Stewart Lithgo, was Commonwealth Cruiserweight champion.

Bob Foster possessed a great left-hook and was one of the most murderous punching light-heavyweights in history. His KOs of Tiger, Rondon and Quarry in world title fights are some of the most brutal one-punch knock-outs you will ever see. Yet, whenever he was matched with a ranked heavyweight, he couldn't put a dent in them, nearly always being knocked out himself. Personally, I think Dempsey would be a terrible match-up for Foster.

His brother Buddy Baer, who twice challenged Joe Louis for the heavyweight title, fought at the Vetch against Jack London, father of Brian London, and spoke fondly of his time in Swansea in his autobiography. He also beat Swansea's Jim Wilde in his previous fight at Harringay in London.

Nat started by ranking the top six in all divisions in the 1953 edition of his annual Ring Record Book. He expanded it to a top ten in his 1958 book - “50 years at ringside”. They remained unchanged to his death. The 1968 Ring article reprinted those rankings.

Fleischer witnessed the whole of Ali's first reign and nine defences of the title before his exile. The part of Ali's career that is generally considered his peak.
He also seen the first three fights of his comeback and was ringside for the first Frazier fight. He wrote an editorial in late 1971, addressing the issue of not including Ali in his top ten. One of the reasons given was what I mentioned earlier, he would have to drop Marciano to accommodate Ali and he considered Rocky the better fighter. His exact words - “Clay never could have beaten Marciano”.
He stated he could see no reason to change his rankings from 1958. Another reason was the decisiveness of Frazier's victory over Ali, another fighter who Fleischer didn't include in his top ten.

Except for Ring magazine founder and long-time editor, Nat Fleischer, who didn't have Ali in his top 10.

One of his main reasons being that he would have to drop Marciano, who he had at #10, to make way for Ali and he considered Marciano better.

Swansea player called up to England squad!!!
at 20:36 5 Sep 2023

I think Tammy Abraham played for England while on loan to us and because of his form in a Swans shirt.

Didn't Alfie Mawson get called up to the England squad too but wasn't selected to play?

Ken Buchanan RIP ...

Yes, Benitez beat Duran fairly comfortably while defending his Light-Middle title. Benitez wasn't the most exciting to watch because he was such a defensive master but a great fighter nonetheless. Their fight happened in that two-year period where Duran lost his way after he quit against Leonard. He fought two more Brits in that period, losing to Kirkland Laing and struggling to outpoint former British champion Jimmy Batten.

Which Duran-Leonard fight are you referring to?
Duran beat Leonard in their first fight, famously quit in the rematch, then years later Leonard easily beat an unusually placid Duran in their rubber-match.

Ken Buchanan RIP ...

Buchanan was a mile behind on the score-cards but the ref was poor, turning a blind eye to Duran's use of the head throughout the fight.
Incredible to think that Duran would fight on for a further thirty years after this fight, only stopping after getting seriously injured in a car crash at the age of 50. One of those rare boxers who fought in five different decades.
