I will stand to be corrected if I am wrong, but as far as I know, it is still a Football League / FA requirement that all clubs make a printed programme available for every game with certain basic minimum requirements such as line-ups, forthcoming fixtures and results. This requirement has been in place since the late 1800’s so until it is revoked there will still be programmes of some description for every game. Double programmes were not unusual at some clubs way beck when. About 100 years ago there were occasions when Liverpool & Everton used to issue a joint programme for the same day, so a 1st team game for Everton & a Reserve team game for Liverpool or the other way around. A few other clubs did joint programmes on occasions. As already mentioned apart from pre-season I don’t recall Saints ever doing this for two League games. The amount of money this will save is absolutely minuscule when compared to what we are paying Sam Edozie every week not to play football…
Pat, go back at him with Simon Charlton & Graham Potter
And there is also Jason Bowen and Nigel Quashie who also provides our obscure fact for today. Nigel’s brother Steve has been manager of QPR’s Women’s team since 2009 and credited with the discovery and development of England International Chloe Kelly.
I think the biggest compliment I can pay Leo is this:
Today without Leo was similar to 30/30+ years ago watching a Saints team without Matt Le Tiss if he was out injured (or dropped by the village idiot Branfoot!). He really is the heartbeat of the side. IMO, he also improves the performances of some of the other players as he creates opportunities at such pace others will get a pass with more space and time than normal thus giving them a better chance to be effective too as the opposition are constantly on the back foot.
If anyone does not watch the regular club updates on YouTube check out the SFC Pitchside Unseen videos, there’s one for every game, and they are footage shot from the touchline and give a very different insight into a game compared to footage shot on high from the main gantry. On the PSU footage Leo looks unplayable at times so my compliment stands, albeit I accept the fact they were very different kinds of players.
I would say at best he’s a liability, it’s just that he does not always get punished for his mistakes at this level, especially against average opposition with QPR away recently being a good example where he made two stupid mistakes in the second half that were not capitalised on by the opposition.
The good news is the transfer window will be open in just over 4 weeks time.
The not so good news is it is SR who we must rely upon to do the right thing and do it quickly. Something they failed miserably to do in the summer when everyone other than our great owners and the people they employ to recruit new players could see that a better keeper was a top priority.
Saw Man U's 'Holy Trinity' all play at The Dell in an FA Cup 3rd Round tie in January 1972 on a bog of a pitch - see the highlights below. In addition, I would have also seen the 'West Ham won the World Cup' trio of Hurst, Peters and Moore play against us for West Ham. Then Alan Ball for Everton and Arsenal.
Frannies list covers a lot of ground, I suppose you have to accept Ronaldo and Beckham into the fold and I agree on Thierry Henry and Kenny Dalglish.
If we have to name just one then I'd go for Best.
Technically this is cheating, as I have seen three other icomic players play against English sides.
Pele for Santos against Aston Villa at Villa Park on a cold Monday evening in February 1972, Villa won 2-1, Pele didn't score but was magnificent. Edu scored a great goal for Santos in the 2nd half. The whole game was played with only three of the four floodlights working. Villa were in Div 3 at the time but it drew a crowd of over 54,000 and broke their record gate receipts at that time.
My ex was a Spurs ST holder and I used to go with her occasionally if Saints didn't have a game the same day so saw:
Maradona play a full 90 mins for Spurs at White Hart Lane in the Ossie Ardiles Testimonial game v Inter Milan. As with Pele, Maradona didn't score but Spurs did win 2-1 and he was excellent.
Cruyff play for Feyenoord in a UEFA Cup tie also at Spurs where their own icon, Hoddle, outshone The Master. In fairness, Cruyff was in his mid-30's and a shadow of what he once was but still managed a few glimpses and did sit a Spurs defender on his backside with a trademark Cruyff turn. Spurs steamrollered Feyenoord with Hoddle superbly orchestrating most of the good things they did that evening.
One player I never got to see that I would have loved to was Zico and from the decade before I was old enough to go to games, the late, great Duncan Edwards.
Grim, whilst I agree with you in principle, since 2007 the England players have donated their match fees and decent parts of of their tournament prize money to charity so I would say carry on paying them strictly on condition that they continue to donate their fees to charity. £5m donated and counting allegedly…
This from Google:
England players have donated their appearance fees to charity since 2007 through the England Footballers Foundation. The money is given to various charities, including Cancer Research UK, UNICEF, and Help for Heroes. This initiative has raised over £5 million for good causes.
What they donate: Players donate their match fees, which are understood to be around £2,000 per game. In addition to their match fees, they have also donated chunks of their tournament prize money to charity, such as NHS Charities Together after the Euro 2020 tournament.
How it works: The England Footballers Foundation, set up in 2007, is the vehicle through which the players make these donations.
Why they do it: The players choose to donate their appearance fees because they believe it's the right thing to do and that being paid to represent their country is not necessary.
Impact: The foundation has distributed over £5 million to a wide range of charities since its inception.
And of course, he’s better than Pep G, or at least that’s what he claimed in one of his crackpot post match interviews whilst mismanaging us.
If God is on his side let’s hope he puts Jesus in goal, he hates crosses… aahh, hang on, 🤬, I forgot, it doesn’t matter, we’ve not got a proper centre forward….
OK, to put a slightly different spin on this, if they are saying TE will remain as interim manager until after the International break then perhaps SR are playing a waiting game, and if so, for who? I am just wondering if that might just be Daniel Farke from Leeds United. Would just be a typical SR oh-so-clever play to wait for Leeds to sack him rather than go through another drama like they did bickering for months with Swansea over less money than they paid for D.Downs’s left leg! If Leeds sack Farke and that’s who SR want it would be cheaper than paying Leeds compo even if they are about to pull the trigger.
As part of new Labour manifesto they have promised to give every town in the North of England a HUGE boost, then the people can come out of their terraced houses and lick all the chocolate off of it 🙂
Now, I am not surprised to hear that Waitrose mini jaffas may top the originals. I was reading in the paper that McVities have recently changed the recipe causing a wave of angry reaction from regular consumers. There are now only 10 per pack, they are smaller and the sponge is now the consistency of cat litter!
I gave up on McVities Jaffas years ago after their previous downgrade when M&S launched their own far superior oblong shaped Jaffas [also in Lemon & Lime flavour]. My daughter buys either Lidl or Aldi jaffas and even they are better than the originals. Same with the Jaffa Cake bars apparently, recently shrunk in size and poorer quality...
Also, watch out when buying mince pies, a lot of them have shrunk about 30% in size compared to last year including M&S's but with hefty price hikes included...
Spot on CB (and Pat as well) one thing I’d add is no more chances for Damion ‘Donkey’ Downs, did he even touch the ball last night?? We have a young striker, Nicholas Oyekunle, who has been scoring for fun at U/21 level and for this coming weekend at least we have his usual manager in charge of the 1st team. It stands to reason that if anyone knows him well then TE does. If TE honestly thinks Donkey Downs deserves a place on the pitch ahead of Oyekunle then the poor lad may as well give up football and join WS on his PlayStation. If anyone should know how to integrate NO into the first team in terms of where to play him and how to best support him it is TE. So, give the lad a chance this weekend ahead of DD please.
That’s an interesting point you make there Nick regarding WS’s brothers. Could it be they were an integral part of what made WS tick? I am thinking back to Lawrie McMenemy and John Mortimore, I remember when Mortimore left Saints he went to manage Benfica, now, we are talking about an era when you could probably count on the fingers of one hand the coaches or assistant managers as they were often called who you could name. We all knew the boot room hierarchy at Anfield, Venables No.2 and the No.2 at Arsenal and not a lot else. For a coach / AM to get to manage one of Europe’s top 20 clubs was incredible. Not that long after McMenemy departed for Sunderland, I distinctly remember an interview he did with Brian Moore for The Big Match post-game and try as he might Brian Moore just could not get a sensible answer out of Lawrie as to why he was leaving SFC. I have always wondered if he knew deep down without Mortimore he’d fail as he was the man manager and JM was the tactical brains. That I will never know… Likewise, just wondering if WS was simply not really up to it without his brothers input? Likewise, we will never know and I’m in not rush to find out! But just a thought…
I think even SR have realised that they now need to cover their own (not so smart) arses after the crowd rounded not only on WS but SR as well during the PNE game. Some very suitable chants of SR get out our club from a crowd of relatively passive happy clappers up to that point.
I think OR would be a great influence in and around the club even if the years have taken their toll a bit, he can still be a positive influence every day at training and in the dressing room, then if managed sensibly we can get whatever we can out of him on match days.
