They probably just kept him in a straitjacket, TBF.

Burrell again...
at 12:53 13 Dec 2025

You could always argue that your ‘unrhythmic and untuneful’ chanting is, in fact, an attempt at ‘syncopation’ (essentially a disturbance or interruption of the regular flow of rhythm) in order to render the Burrell chant more ‘engaging and groovy’ (in the words of AI). (Alternative theories available).

I’ll take any opportunity to big up Oscar Brown Jr. Here’s a performance from the Ed Sullivan Show in 1961. Don’t know for certain but I think the little boy is his son, Oscar ‘Bobo’ Brown III, who lost his life in a car crash in 1996. Oscar wrote the lyrics for him and it always gets to me …

Headphones Norm

Not QPR-related but I’m sure we were all shocked and saddened to hear that a Charlton Athletic supporter lost his life at The Valley on Saturday during the game against Portsmouth. I’ve just been digging around and it seems the poor chap was called Norman Barker, aka ‘Headphones Norm’ due to his distinctive appearance, and had evidently been a well-known character at both home and away games for over 40 years. I’ve taken the liberty of copying and pasting part of one of the many tributes from Addicks fans here …

‘For so many of us, Headphones Norm was part of the matchday experience. You’d see him walking down Floyd Road, behind the Covered End, or settled in his usual spot in the Lower Covered End. At away games he was just as present, always recognisable with his distinctive look, the army jacket covered in badges, the famous headphones, the calm and warm expression of a man who’d seen it all with Charlton and still turned up everywhere we went’.

RIP Headphones Norm.

Could you do a three game/gig week though, Stow? Seriously, though, that’s an impressive display of stamina. I think the furthest I’ve walked to a game is from Clapham Junction when the trains were up the spout, although I did cheat a bit by jumping on random buses that appeared to be going in the right direction (they weren’t).

It’s Türkiye Twizzlers now then, is it? Guess they needed a rebrand after all that flak from Jamie Oliver.

Respect there, Planet. It’s that sort of lateral thinking that feeds innovation and makes us come back for more. I’ve now formed a mental picture of Gerd Muller, the prolific German striker known as ‘Der Bomber’. Now I’m not sure Gerd ever took ‘corners’ as such, which does rather limit further incursions into ‘Muller Corner Jokes’ territory, but might there be an opportunity to explore dessert-related jokes that reference his nickname instead? La Bombe Surprise, for example? Or Bombe Glacée?

It’s entirely possible that I may not have thought this through properly.

In many respects it’s a pity that the Tower of London isn’t situated in the middle of land covered with dense forest and tangled vegetation. Yesterday’s events could then have been referred to as … ‘The Crumble In The Jungle’.

I’m here all week.

Happy to oblige, Tactical. Here’s verse one from ‘Billericay Dickie’ by Ian Dury …

Had a love affair with Nina
In the back of my Cortina
A seasoned-up hyena
Could not have been more obscener
She took me to the cleaners
And other misdemeanours
But I got right up between her
Rum and her Ribena
