Sam Field
at 10:28 17 Sep 2025

I'm expecting that quite a few of you will disagree with me, but since his first full season with us, Sam Field has been our most important player.

As good as Jimmy Dunne for the past 18 months? No. As good as Illias Chair when he is performing at his best? No, but take the period as a whole & his consistency is the main reason we are still in The Championship.

However, I do understand where the OP is coming from, even though I dislike the tone. IF we are to progress, a central midfield pairing of two from Field, Varane & Hayden is not likely to create the chances that we need to score goals, although in theory it should make it harder for us to concede!

Until he is sold, I expect Varane to be the first choice in this position as we need to increase his worth to other clubs, which will leave Sam in a very awkward place. He needs to play games or he will become a forgotten man. Of course, if we're not winning matches without him, then he will get his game time with us!

I suspect that the clubs intention is to play a "more creative" player alongside Varane, unless it is considered our opponents are capable of dominating a defensive/ ball playing pairing. That would only apply to a few Championship teams. I also suggest that they might be considering Chair for the role as he possibly has the most ability to receive the ball deep & then move it forward.

Sam Field has been very important to Rangers & we should always have good memories of him, but every player has a limited time with a club & it might be that Sam is reaching that point. I would never advocate "getting rid" of him, but neither would I like to see him being reduced to a 15 minute per game role. He deserves far better than that.

Strangely enough, my memory is that Rangers were ther only crowd that didn't applaud the away goalkepper! This was back in the 60's & 70's so that might have changed as we grew older.

How did Madsen play yesterday?
at 10:20 15 Sep 2025

I think that says it all about you & the one person you quote!

Of course, Frey made the wrong decision to shoot rather than play the ball to Vale(?), but he made himself available to receive passes & defended from the front.

Not as good as Burrell was, but faster & far more mobile than Dykes was in 90% of the games he played for us. And I'm one of the few on the board who appreciated what Lyndon gave us in the other 10% of matches. Expecially against Preston!

If only it was just at Christmas!

Last year we had three consectutive months of bus replacement between Ipswich & Liverpool Street! Apart from the "normal" railtrack activity the building of the new Chelmsford Parkway station has affected us.

A Couple of Things From Yesterday

A bigger problem than having evry player back defending corners, is not having enough players ready to defend when we have a corner! Twice yesterday, Wrexham could have scored from Rangers corners.

Saito & Burrell have been very good, with Vale & Kone only a little behind them.

A very deserved lead.

According to Wiki we've had 24 managers since 2000, although Ian Holloway & Mick Harford are listed twice. Personally, I've no idea if Harford or Hart were permanent or temporary appointments, but if we deduct their 3 joint appearances we come to the 21 quoted above. The Briatore years account for 9 managers listed, at least 6 of them permanent.

I assume that Watford were reasonably stable until they became part of a group ownership.

I'm in complete agreement Hunter, although apart from Kone, I feel you're being on the optimistic side with the possible valuations for our existing players.

My point was that IF Millwall have increased the wages they are prepared to pay, they will need to make annual profits from sales or the extra expenditure will creep up on them.

That still doesn't explain why their operating costs increased by over £6 million. Perhaps they've increased the wages that they are prepared to pay & this would explain how they attract players to sign for them?

That is only sustainable if they continue to sell players at a healthy profit, but they shouldn't have FFP problems until the end od the decade at the earliest.

Our away support, and support in general....

I'm fairly certain that in 2013/14 we sold out both tiers at Millwall. Having to spend the best part of 40 minutes locked in at the end of the match is why I've not bothered to return. And that was to watch the s**t that Harold served up for us!

Cold Blow Lane in the 72/73 season was my most frightening experience watching Rangers & it was only 3 or 4 days after surviving Ninian Park! Don Givens didn't help us at Millwall that day when he signalled 1-0 to the crowd!

The season 25-26 squad thread
at 17:23 4 Sep 2025

It states that you must name at least one player who came through the club's development scheme. Would that be Salamon or Chair?

*I have no idea what date is used to determine whether you are over 21, but as Salamon is 21 he may not have been needed to be listed apart from meeting this criteria.

*I've now looked this up & it seems to apply to anybody born on 1/1/04 or after. Salamon would be treated as not needing to ne named.

I remember it as a poster outside a church asking What will you do when the Lord comes?

Underneath was written Move St John to inside right.

I've no idea where they were going to put their top scorer, Roger Hunt!

I'm another one with you on this Danny.

When I read that we need a number 8 box to box midfielder, I assume that we need a reincarnation of Gerry Francis. He fits all the criteria asked for - box to box, midfielder & number 8. A future captain as well!
