Brighton One Win From Promotion ! Tuesday, 29th Mar 2011 22:24
Ok not mathematically yet, but fact is I feel that 86 will be enough for automatci promotion.
Brighton once again went and did what they do best and that is remaining tight at the back and making the most of their chances, many Saints fans have been a little scathing of this, but truth is its because they are doing everything that we should have been doing, are capable of doing and to be blunt arent doing.
When I have moaned about individual defensive errors on this site I have been lambasted and told what a great defensive record we have and how many clean sheets we have kept, but the fact is we have given away too many goals and at vital times as well.
Take last week at Charlton for instance, could you see brighton getting caught out by that sucker punch with four minutes to go, the stark answer is no, Brighton are methoical and tight, their play might not be as spectacular as Saints but their players dont make as many mistakes as ours.
Its not sour grapes, I truly wish Brighton all the best for their promotion, lord knows their fans deserve it after the tough times they have had over the past 15 years with regard to their ground problems, but I really look at our side and think we should have been matching them point for point.
Hopefully we will secure automatic promotion alongside them, but if we do we have done it the hard way with a defence and goalkeeper who have constantly let in soft goals and sadly a manager who hasnt dealt with the problem for whatever reason.
Again as i said some will call me a moaner, but the fact is we are sat where we are sat and brighton are on the verge of being promoted because they have been methodical.

Nick, You are not, in my opinion, a moaner. You are merely stating what a lot of fans think. You are quite correct when you say that Brighton would not have thrown away a lead at Charlton in the way that Saints did last week. Saints have under-performed in areas where, quite frankly, Brighton haven't. Last night they won 1-0 away to D&RFC with only two shots on target. On occasions this season they have won 1-0 with only ONE shot on target. Saints seem to need 8 to 10 shots on target for every goal we score. Brighton also seem to have the knack of keeping it tight at the back. Saints are unable to do this simply through too many school boy errors which take place in defence. Credit is due to Gus Poyet who has, in my opinion, done a great job in motivating and managing his team to punch above their weight in League 1 this season. They may not play pretty football but it is effective. Their philosophy is to not concede. If they don't score then the least they get is a goalless draw. I can only imagine what Poyet would have done, had he been our manager, with the resources that we have at our disposal!!! I am disappointed that we are not walking this league in the way that Norwich did last year. I hope that we can go up automatically but, as there is absolutely no room for error now, it is going to be tight right up until the last kick of the last match of the season. SfS.

I agree with all of this. BHA have not got as strong a squad as we have man for man, but are walking this league. It will take a major collapse for us to get anywhere near them now and we are going to need some much better performances to even reach second.

Agree with everything said above - apart from that vindictive line from Eusebio. What an utter plank that bloke is!

Thanks for the kind words and looking at this piece in its context, to be honest I wish I Seaford Saint had written it he put it a lot more eloquently. As for Eusebio dont pay any attention to him I ceased to a long time ago, I just let him get on with his Oscar Wilde fantasies

I think everyone (except Eusebio) has summed up our season fairly well. Nick, I don't think you're moaning. It is incredibly frustrating giving away soft and late goals, although our goals conceded is still fairly respectable. What's more encouraging is that we can definitely be much better and hopefully we can 'do a Norwich' next season and challenge at the top of the league above. If we finish strongly everything else that has happened on the pitch up until now can be forogtten.

Only seems a few weeks ago that Nigel was saying our target was still to win the League. I think we'll know by this time next week whether we will get second. We must get maximum points from Dons and Charlton. Simple as that.
