At last, Leeds make a signing!

Preston keeper Andy Lonergan is finally a Leeds United player.

Earlier this month, it looked like Leeds' pursuit of the 27-year-old stopper was dead-in-the-water when talks broke down and it seemed he would get more dough warming the bench at Everton.

However Everton and Preston failed to agree a deal according to Sky Sports News, are the Toffee's even more spendthrift than us?

Lonergan is expected to be first choice ahead of our earlier summer signing goalie Paul Rachubka, who arrived on a free from Simon Grayson's ex-club and Preston's bitter rivals Blackpool.

LeedsUnited.com report Lonergan agreed a three-year-deal earlier today and despite being linked with a whole ruck of Goalies, Simon Grayson described Lonergan as his "number one target".

Whether or not Lonergan proves to be better than Kasper Schmeichel, the player Grayson transferred to Leicester City for "footballing reasons" remains to be seen.

Late last week, it seemed that Leeds were set to sign Fulham's David Stockdale on-loan, however the terms the Cottagers apparently wanted on the deal, including a 24-hour-recall-clause would have been madness for Leeds to agree to.

Mind you, under Uncle Ken, expect the un-expected! So we expect to see him go and raid Manchester City for Joe Hart and Carlos Tevez, oh and Gary Cahill would be nice too.

It seems more than likely that Grayson will be forced to shop in the bargain basements as ever. Leeds also revealed that he will have another look at trialists French winger Alexander Mendy and Hungarian left-back Boldiszar Boldor when Leeds play Sandefjord in tragedy hit Norway tomorrow night.

Ex Aston Villa starlets Isiah Osbourne and JLloyd Samuel will not travel to Norway due to fitness. Osbourne is staying at Thorp Arch to work on his fitness whilst Samuel sat out of the 1-1 draw at Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday due to an unspecified injury.

Minor point but 'spendthrift' = someone who spends/squanders money..!! Hope Lonergan can do it though - and with Paddy looking good again plus a decent left back we might concede less than last season! Just as well as I worry about McCormack and Paynter ever cutting it!
