KenwynneJones Shows The State Of Football In General
Friday, 24th Aug 2007 15:58

The arrogance of Kenwynne Jones in refusing to play for Saints, shows just how low Football has sunk, to the degree where players are ruling the game.

A year ago news that Kenwynne Jones had demanded a transfer would not have been greeted with two much dissent by the Southampton faithful, in fact if a club had offered over £250,000 most would have offered to drive him to the train station.

The fact that Derby & Sunderland seem both willing to offer well in excess of £5 million is a case of the game has gone mad.

Saints fans of course wont want to see Jones go, but to be honest he is not worth £5 million and most would concur that spent correctly we can do a lot more with £5 million than we can with Jones himself.

In truth Jones after three years at the Club including several loan spells elsewhere really onnly burst into life in a spell last season, careerwise for Saints he has made  71 league appearances scoring 19 goals, 14 of those last term, although in truth he only managed two in his last eight games, both coming in a demolition of Southend. He was good when it came to taking on the minnows, but in truth he didnt cut it against the better sides.

But its a sad reflection of where football is today that a player with Jones limited appearances and goal scoring record feels able to turn round and refuse to play for the club, two years ago when he wasnt good enough to get in the side we didnt turn round and refuse to pay him !!!!  he would do well to remember that, players today call all the shots and that is why the game is going to the dogs.

In truth it would be nice to turn round to Jones and get tough, but Saints financial predicament is such that we wont be able to do that, no we will probably have to take the money and run.

Will we miss Jones ? Yes of course we will, he did make a positive contribution last year, but in truth Rasiak scored more than him and Saganowski almost as many in a third of the games, statistics do not make Jones our first choice striker.

So its farewell to Kenwynne, its sad it has to end in this manner but looking at the state of football, not surprising, Jones isnt the first to arrogantly think he is bigger than any Club and the game itself, and probably he wont be the last to come back to earth with a big bang, he is a good Championship forward, but Premiership class ? no way.
