Dyer Sentenced
Dyer Sentenced

Nathan Dyer has pleaded guilty to burglary and been sentenced.

Nathan Dyer pleaded guilty to burglary at Portsmouth magistrates court relating to am incident at a nightclub in the same City where he and several others were filmed going through the handbags of employees of the nightclub.

In criminal fraternities this would be described as being "Bang to rights" & Dyer has chosen not to prolong the matter further by his plea.

The sentence is 60 hours of community service, some might say that this is light, but the truth is this is probably the sentence that would hurt Dyer the most, to be blunt the offence wasnt ever bad enough to warrant a custodial sentence, so the two options open were either fining Dyer or community service.

With restrictions on just how much he could be fined, this was never going to be a sentence that would actually mean anything to Dyer, in todays age, professional footballers have more money than they can spend and even if the fine ran into thousands, it wouldnt hurt Dyer's bank balance so effectively he wouldnt be punished.

However community service will punish the player, 60 hours is a significant amount of time, even spread over several months and will hopefully remind Dyer of how most of those who watch him play live, Dyer's quoted wage at the time of the offence was £5,000 per week and this has presumably now risen, so if we take a guess and say he is now on £8k a week, 60 hours represents a week and a half's hours then effectively it could be said that on his wages scale Dyer has been fined over £12,000 in time, get my drift ? NO well never mind at least we know its a punishment that will humiliate him, make him do some real work and hopefully humble him so much that both on and off the pitch he will be a better person.

When he has served his sentence Dyer should be allowed to rebuildd his life and career, as I stated a few days ago, this is a bad offence in that it involved robbery from a person, a person that could ill afford to be robbed, but it isnt one of violence or abuse, I would say that for a large proportion of Saints support they could either say "there but for the grace of god go I" perhaps not in this type of crime, but another, or they know someone who has been convicted of a crime in the past, Dyer should rightly pay the price but not for the rest of his life.
