Sheriffadz kicks off his Planet Swans column with a look at expectation and belief

My main focus this week is the fact that so many fans seem to be in awe of our current stature in the football league pyramid. Please understand that this is a mistake and totally the wrong attitude to be taking into, what is undoubtedly going to be, our most testing season for a quarter of a century.

This ''just happy to be here'' attitude is something that Martinez will be wary of and something he will be working hard to abolish - if of course present. I can assure you that with our current crop of players - we are not here just to make up the numbers! We have a top half team, with top half management, along with a top half stadium and as proved in pre-season, a top half chairman - lets not let them down by adopting a bottom half mentality.

I believe this ever growing feeling stems from the fact that it wasnt all that long ago we were playing in front of 3,000 fans and faced extinction from the football league. But let me re-iterate this is a very different Swansea City and to even compare the two by means of guaging expectation and goals for future seasons is foolish to say the least.

I would like to sign off on this point by stressing my belief that under expectation is just as dangerous as over expectation.

My final point this week is the other ever growing opinion that those who voice a concern about Swansea City are thought of as ''just moaning'' or ''not real supporters''. Well let it be me to tell you that to ignore a problem can be, and often is, more damaging than to seek out a problem and try to invoke change.

A key figure in the world of business once said, ''The key to continued success is to take an already successful module and make it even better'' - this statement holds great precidence in the world of football aswell.

Last season was a resounding success on and off the field, finally sending us back to the second tier of football. However, allowing such success with inevitable strengths to cloud ones view of the weaknesses is in my opinion a mistake. As those constructively criticizing the team by seeking negatives to turn into positives are as important to this clubs success as those that blindly praise it.

We are lucky that we have a good balance of both at Swansea, but it would be foolish to chase away the ''constructive critics'' as too much of either type of supporter is seen as a bad thing, at least by me.

Like my seemingly controversial posts on the forum - a lot of you will disagree with my article, but if I can change the attitude of just one supporter to an attitude I genuinely believe is the correct one and the one that is ultimately beneficial to Swansea City then I am content.

We have the makings of a fantastically successful club here, but when needed we cant be blind to change.

Until next week

The Sheriff.
