Going to Hull in a handcart — Open All R’s Podcast Tuesday, 30th Apr 2013 23:30 by LFW
Simon Barker is the guest on this week’s post mortem-themed podcast, assessing where the season has gone wrong for the R’s and comparing it to the relegation he was involved in back in 1996.
Barker says the money invested by Tony Fernandes and the board should have prevented Rangers’ season of strife and says players must look at their own performances and ask if they did all they could.
Comparing it with his own time at Loftus Road he said: “Going back to 1995/96 we lost Les, he scored 23 goals that season before he went to Newcastle and Ray replaced him with Mark Hateley. We started the season with Danny Dichio and Kevin Gallen – Kevin got the same amount of goals he got the season before and I think Danny got 12. So we replaced the 23 goals with 12. Hateley came in at the wrong time with his ankle injury – he was a good lad, I know the fans didn’t take to Mark, we all liked him and respected him but he never hit the heights he did at Rangers. But we were never talking about a lot of money with Mark. Here in this situation there is so much money been invested this should not have happened.”
Host David Fraser is joined by regular panellist Paul Finney as well as guests Sandy Lerman and journalist Danny Lee.

The attitudes of a lot of the current crop of our "players" is a million miles away from the likes of Simon Barker. I was at a defeat at Stoke away, I think it was the season we went down, some of the fans were having a pop at the players as they left the pitch at full time, you could see how upset Barker was and that he genuinely cared and understood why the fans were angry. What do we have now? Bosingwa laughing about relegation. Joey Barton comes out with some rubbish but he hit the nail on the head recently when he sarcastically labelled Mark Hughes as a "sage", his knowledge of football and football clubs and what they need player wise is clearly lacking. I've been shocked at the lack of professionalim of some of these guys, it shouldn't matter what team you play for, you go out on that pitch and give it 100% for your own pride and self respect. If you watch Everton and the commitment of their players on the pitch it's frightening, the complete opposite of our lot trudging about. We need to follow the lead of Norwich and Swansea and not necessarilly buy big name players, but young, hungry up and coming players who want to play for the club and prove themselves. Fernandes seems to have realised this now, let's hope he and Harry put it into practice this summer.

"But we were never talking about a lot of money for Mark" 1.5 million in 1996. 27 appearances and 3 goals. Always knew why i thought Barker was overrated!!

Good point shooters47, we were royally seen off paying anything for Hateley, cheeky so and so used to cup his ear to the crowd when he scored one his rare goals.

Blogs 31 bloggersKnees-up Mother Brown #19 by wessex_exile February, and the U’s enter the most pivotal month of the season. Six games in just four weeks, with four of them against sides also in the bottom six. By March we should be either well clear of danger, or even deeper in the sh*t. With Danny Cowley’s U’s still unbeaten, and looking stronger game on game, I’m sure it’ll be the former, but first we have to do our bit to consign Steve ‘Sour Grapes’ Cotterill’s FGR back to non-league. After our shambolic 5-0 defeat at New Lawn, nothing would give me greater pleasure, even if it meant losing one of my closest awaydays in the process. What’s the excuse going to be today Steve – shocking pitch, faking head injuries, Mexican banditry or some other bit of sour-grapery bullsh*t? Colchester United Polls |
