Leigh Bromby has called time on his playing career but will stay on the coaching staff.

The Dewsbury-born defender announced today that he was hanging up his boots, on the advice of his surgeon aged just 33. Bromby missed last season in its entirety and has never recovered from a knee injury sustained at Cardiff in April 2012.

"I've been advised by the surgeon Andrew Williams to retire from the game," Brimby told lufc.com on Thursday morning.

"It's become clear over the last 14 months that I wouldn't be able to continue in a playing capacity and it's with a heavy heart that I've decided to formally retire as a player.

"People say as one door closes another opens, and I'd like to thank Leeds United for giving me the opportunity to take my first steps in coaching with the Under-16s.

"The club were good enough to allow me to gain experience last season by working with young players and I'm delighted to have the opportunity to continue that work on a full-time basis now.

"I've had a wonderful career, and played for some wonderful clubs, and I wanted to finish at a club I've always supported."

Prior to joining Leeds in 2009, Bromby holds the distinction having played over 100 games for both Sheffield clubs, however his heart always belonged to Leeds United the club he followed as a boy.

He joins a growing band if ex Leeds pro's on the coaching staff including Richard Naylor and Neil Sullivan, who recently returned as the u16's Goalkeeping Coach.

Bromby played 66 times for us scoring once. Although he was not the finest defender in our history or recent times, he always gave 100% and can boast a promotion winning medal from League One in 2010.
