Scorer Roberts: We had to give the fans something...

Gary Roberts says the point his goal earned Pompey at Yeovil could be vital at the end of the season.

With the battle for third place and the play-off spots intensifying by the week, Roberts' goal actually closed the gap between Pompey and third-placed Oxford to six points - although two or three other promotion hopefuls did better and won.

Roberts told the Pompey website: 'Hopefully we can look back on this at the end of the season and it will have been a decent point. We dug in after going down to 10 men and got a good goal to get something from the game.

'We’re a big club in this division — you can see that by the amount of travelling fans. So we had to give them something and it was nice that the goal arrived at their end of the ground.

'It was just instinctive. I didn’t have to think too much about it — I just needed to smash it in. I managed to catch the ball quite sweetly and it was nice to see it hit the back of the net.

'We didn’t sit back at that point — we looked like we could go on to get the winner. We went for it. We didn’t play as well as we know we can, but what we did do was dig in and fight hard to give our supporters something to shout about.'

Pompey head to Barnet on Tuesday night and host Cambridge on Saturday.
