Saints To Bid For Tottenham Hotspur Defender Monday, 25th Jul 2016 07:30 Relationships between Saints and Spurs have been tense in the past couple of years since Mauricio Pochettino left St Mary's for White Hart Lane, however the Wanyama sale showed the clubs can do business.
Saints are rumoured to be chasing Spurs defender Kieran Trippier from Totteham Hotspur, they tried to sign him last summer when he left Burnley but lost out to Spurs who took him to North London for a fee of around £3.5 million.
However Trippier has struggled for game time and last season played in only 6 Premier eague games with his main appearances being the 10 Europa League run outs he had.
Now it seems that turning 26 in September he realises that he is not going to prosper at Spurs and is looking to move and it is Saints who are linked.
Certainly Claude Puel has said he would like another right sided defender to back up Cedric Soares and Trippier would cost around £5 million, well within Saints budget.
At that price he would be a good addition to the squad and has a good amount of experience behind him having played 170 League games for Burnley, some of which were in the Premier League as well as games at Barnsley on loan.

Doesn't make sense he would come to Saints and be second choice again. Can't believe Pied would be on higher wages and total deal cost after any signing on fee would be less than the £5m quoted here. Unless of course we are selling Soares for a huge fee to Spain....

This is a pretty exciting signing. I agree it’s a little strange if they consider Soares to be our first choice right back, but if the Euros are anything to go by then Soares needs a bit of competition for his place in order to shine. I have faith in the management that they will not give Trippier any promises about guaranteed first team football, but with right-back being quite a weak position in our squad he should have a better chance of first team football with us. This, then a central defender and a goalkeeper to go and we’re good to go!

I completely agree with Sanguin. We should add a striker as well and a winger as well.

Have we no pride in the club? They take advantage of our finances to take Bale, then take a manager and top players, and now we go hat in hand begging for castoffs? Scouse and Spuds again and again, we sign and develop players for them, sell at a discount, and now "Oh, can't fit him into your starting team? Let us develop him for you so he can go back to you in two years. Money? Oh, whatever you think is fair, we don't mind! We Southampton, the Spuds and Scouse academy

I get that we'd be interested, but I just don't get the mooted fee. It always seems to be Spuds & Scouers that but players who turn out to be not good enough, but they always want to make a profit on them. And they always seem to get it! Bought for £3.5M, failed to get into the side, and is £5M. Why?!

Six games in just four weeks, with four of them against sides also in the bottom six. By March we should be either well clear of danger, or even deeper in the sh*t. With Danny Cowley’s U’s still unbeaten, and looking stronger game on game, I’m sure it’ll be the former, but first we have to do our bit to consign Steve ‘Sour Grapes’ Cotterill’s FGR back to non-league. After our shambolic 5-0 defeat at New Lawn, nothing would give me greater pleasure, even if it meant losing one of my closest awaydays in the process.
