Boss hopes Charlton and Pompey are going the same way

Karl Robinson hopes Charlton are a club on the up - and hopes Pompey are too.

The Addicks boss was bitterly disappointed his team lost as their club celebrated a quarter of a century since they returned to The Valley, also with a clash against Pompey.

He highlighted similiarities between the way Charlton and Pompey had both been saved by their fans.

Robinson told the press after the game: 'Fans are at the heartbeat of every football club and ourselves and Portsmouth have had difficult times of late — but fans have been there to get us out of the mire.

‘Portsmouth have won the FA Cup, been at the highest level and had success. We need to get these two clubs back to where they belong. It’s the best atmosphere I’ve seen — but the most important thing is that we got beat.

‘The fans were excellent and they showed exactly what the club means to people. We’ve let people down a bit and that is something that we are very disappointed with. But we’re very thankful to be playing in this great stadium due to what the fans achieved back then.’

Robinson did take issue with Pompey boss Kenny Jackett's assertion the Addicks had much more strength in depth than the Blues. Robinson said the fact there were nine changes from the side who lost to Pompey in the League Trophy last month merely showed they had been putting their faith in youth in the knockout competition.
