Are Saints Going Blind In The Transfer Market ? Friday, 5th Jan 2018 10:34 The whisper in the football industry is that Manchester United are willing to offload Daley Blind and that Southampton might be his destination.
Daley Blind is not in Jose Mourinho's long term plans and he is happy to let the Dutchman depart in the transfer window.
Saints were linked with Blind before he went to Old Trafford back in August 2014, but the lure of Old Trafford was too much for him back then.
His time at United was solid up to the arrival of Mourinho and then he started to fall out of favour, this season he has only started 3 league games plus another 2 as sub being used mainly in the Champions League and the League cup.
He was due to be out of contract at United at the end of this season but they have recently invoked a 1 year extension clause meaning he is now tied in till the summer of 2019, they appear to have done this purely to allow them to get some financial gain when he does leave rather than feeling he has any long term future.
He could again be a target for Saints, he would be ideal to form a partnership with fellow countryman Wesley Hoedt in the centre of defence but like many Dutchmen he is also able to play in oher positions including left back and in midfield.
His wages would not be a problem he is on £70k a week at Old Trafford and would perhaps take a slight drop, likewise his fee would not be too far above the £14 million United paid in 2014.
Hw would appear to tick all the boxes for Saints given his quality, age, wages and transfer fee.

Another of LvG's rejects at Man U.(?) Maybe he just doesn't fit the mould at MU, but then again we saw that Luke Shaw left Saints with high hopes, but came a cropper trying to fit into the alternative MU playing formation. I have to admit that I am distinctly UN-impressed by Blind's performances when I've seen him play for United. Maybe he is a better player and is just a square peg at MU? He might turn out to be a success with us - if this story is true - and we can sign him? I'm sure any one of the several CB names being bandied around ....CDAJFU in some way. BUT I'm more concerned about which striker(s) we sign before 31st January. IMHO - we need (at least two). Freak injuries can occur at anytime, and even a star signing could get a knock that might put him out of action for the rest of the season, and we'd be back to square one. I think those we have are all talented (in their own way), but we won't survive if they can only score on my wedding anniversary, or the wife's birthday.

I think he'd be a good signing, I guess with a view that he would allow Bertrand to depart as his main position is left back. Blind doesn't really have the height to play CB full time. So with that in mind, I hope Saints have other ideas for a permanent CB signing this window

I agree with the headline it looks like we are led by blind mice. Liverpool has issues in defense, they did business the very first day of the transfer period. Meanwhile les reed, just like in August sat on his hands thinking a striker that scored once every 300 days and attacking midfielders that cannot attach or pass or score goals would be enough. I think his delusional words were that we have one of the best midfields in the pl. while les sat on his hands, teams knows we are desperate and will raise their prices when we come calling. We are about to get another les reed special

Also note, Blind's, preferred position at Ajax was DM and he played there for a bit when he came in to Man U. As MoPe efforts to play Davis there have been an unremitting disaster, I guess there's a view that blind could cover a few roles. Not that we need another DM in my opinion. What did we sign Lemina for?!?

Blind is a good footballer but we've nowhere for him to fit in. He's not big enough to be a centre back nor physical enough to be a holding midfielder, not creative enough to be an attacking midfielder and not quick enough to be a full back! As a squad player, for sure, he has merit but he's a jack of all trades.... and not what saints require!

van Dijk of Liverpool is a good option for us if we want an all Dutch CB's. Surprised Les hasn't been in for him with an offer

No thank you. I am happy with the back 7 we have 3 decent CB's and 4 WB's, and Super Mario/OR/PEH/Davis fill the center midfield well. What we need is a big front man who can score and this Guido Carrillo looks like the ticket on paper...add Theo and I will be looking up again.

Blogs 31 bloggersKnees-up Mother Brown #19 by wessex_exile February, and the U’s enter the most pivotal month of the season. Six games in just four weeks, with four of them against sides also in the bottom six. By March we should be either well clear of danger, or even deeper in the sh*t. With Danny Cowley’s U’s still unbeaten, and looking stronger game on game, I’m sure it’ll be the former, but first we have to do our bit to consign Steve ‘Sour Grapes’ Cotterill’s FGR back to non-league. After our shambolic 5-0 defeat at New Lawn, nothing would give me greater pleasure, even if it meant losing one of my closest awaydays in the process.
