QPR top agents payment chart, Magilton says Faurlin needs time – evening news

QPR spent more on payments to agents than any other Football League team in the first six months of this season. On the pitch Magilton is asking for his big money summer signing to be given time to find his feet.

Today’s figures show that QPR spent £380,000 between the beginning of January and end of June this year. While that is more than anybody else in the Football League taken over the course of the whole of last season Rangers are still someway behind the likes of Derby (£1m) and Birmingham (£750k). It is also, in my opinion, highly debatable how much these figures are actually worth when the league on one hand insists that agent’s payments are revealed, but on the other tells clubs to report all transfer fees (which can include sign on fees which can in turn be paid to the agent by the player) as undisclosed.

Nevertheless Football League chairman Brian Mawhinney said: “Given the current financial outlook, it is encouraging that clubs are being more circumspect in terms of their payments to agents. In fact, clubs only committed to pay an agent in 6% of the 3,700 player transactions that took place during the course of the season. This is the lowest figure recorded in the five seasons since the publication of agents' fees began. I would like to think that in pioneering the publication of agents' fees, The Football League has helped bring this about.”

On the pitch manager Jim Magilton has praised new signing Alejandro Faurling for his performance on debut at Bristol City, but urged fans to give the Argentinean a chance to settle in and find his feet. Faurlin showed a decent eye for a pass at Ashton gate on Tuesday night and did not shirk tackles when required but was often caught up in the fast pace and physicality of the game. There were certainly promising signs though.

Magilton told the club’s official website: “It was a baptism of fire for Alejandro at Bristol on Tuesday night. It was a very hard learning curve for him in the first 45 minutes, but he coped well and credit to the lad, he got on the ball regularly in the second half and showed glimpses of what a fine player he is. He passed the ball well and in the manner we want him to. He has been out for a long time and missed a lot of pre-season, so it's a matter of waiting for him to catch up on his match fitness. He lasted longer than we thought we would, but he needs game time in his legs. I think he's a very, very good player and will prove to be a decent acquisition for the football club.”

Elsewhere in the Championship today promising young Ipswich goalkeeper Shane Supple has dropped a bombshell on his club by retiring after “falling out of love with the game.” Supple said: “Playing professional football is not something I want to continue doing. As you grow up you realise there are other things in life and to be honest, the game is not what I thought it was.” West Brom midfield Jonathan Greening has joined Premiership side Fulham on loan. It has been a busy day at the league HQ with a disciplinary charge for Peterborough manager Darren Ferguson who abused match officials after a 3-2 defeat to West Brom on Tuesday, no action against Neil Warnock for his reaction to the phantom goal at Bristol City, and a letter to Palace chairman Simon Jordan for his comments after the same incident.
