In years to come, we'll look back at the time that Jamie Mullan was on
the books of Dale, and think that it all must have been some sort of
mistake. Were we getting him mixed up with a former Burnley manager? Was
he a professional lookalike for Kirk from Coronation Street? Was he
really a footballer?
Because Mullan's time at Spotland lasted
just a couple of weeks. We've had players on a month's loan before now
where that loan spell was cut short, and they'd still have been at Dale
longer than Mullan did.
There was clearly talent with
Mullan, even though he got nowhere near the first team at Dale. As a
kid, he was signed up by his hometown club Notts County before making
the big leap to Manchester United.
He was a regular in the Red
Devils' reserve side, and was said to be competent on both wings. Upon
his release at the end of the 2006-7 season, he was widely expected to
sign for Leeds United, but was released after a trial spell with the
Yorkshire side.
Following that, he spent trial
spells at pretty much every club going. He had time at Swansea,
Huddersfield, Carlisle, Derby, amongst others, yet he couldn't get a
permanent deal with anyone.
He came to Dale on trial, and
after a couple of impressive showings in the reserves, he was given a
contract. However, within days of signing, he was on his way. It was
suggested that he was expecting to be put straight into the Dale side
and the failure of this led to a difference in opinion. Subsequently he
was released.
No doubt bound to feature in
thousand Sunday Newspaper stories focusing on Man Utd's youth team and
what happened to those who didn't make it.
