RamBites: Clough Court-martials Connolly, Hulse Stays & Carroll Goes!

This week our bite size portions of Rams news finds Robbie Savage being made Captain ….again, Rob Hulse is going nowhere despite rumors of a Boro bid and Roy Carroll leaves Derby for Denmark.

Captain Savage Back On Deck

Fans opinion on Paul Connolly has been divided for quite some time as on field performances fluctuated and concerns aired that he was not the man to be wearing the armband. There is no doubt most successful Captains are outgoing, inspirational and outspoken. None of these words would probably be the first used to describe Connolly.

Although a solid player who has done more than his fair share since arriving at the Rams he is not the type of player you expect to see grabbing the team by the scruff of the neck and pulling it to victory. The best Captains are those who outwardly show great passion and leave team mates nowhere to hide when not performing especially with a squad that is a team in development.

For some players being Captain can become more a hindrance than a help and it seems Nigel feels that way. He explained the decision to the DET:

"We just felt we wanted Paul to concentrate on his own game, I think he was quite relieved in some ways because it is a big responsibility, especially when you are at full-back and out of the action. We want somebody in the middle of the park”.

Robbie is a captain in the way he plays anyway and he was very good again in the middle of park with Stephen Pearson. We just wanted to curb their runs a little bit, especially Stephen's, and we saw that and that is probably why we defended better than we did at Scunthorpe."

Hulse Ain’t Goin Nowhere!

Rumors have been swirling around for weeks that Rob Hulse was the target of a 5 million pound bid from Middlesbrough. These links have grown legs in the press but Chairman Adam Pearson has again proven that he is a straight shooter by replying to media speculation and not just squashing the speculation but shredding it and throwing it in the fire.

Mr Pearson said as much to the DET:

"There's nothing in it, the rumors about Middlesbrough being interested in Rob Hulse have been going around for 10 weeks now but we have heard nothing from them. They seem to be doing quite well and have some good striking options”.

"Rob is an absolutely integral part of our team. I think it is a non-story."

Phew… that’s good news Adam. Its tough to find a 20+ goal striker and I think we have one in Hulse this season if he stays fit and on the park. The type of wide, crossing football that Nigel likes to play could prove to be a smorgasbord for the big man.

A Great Day(ne) For Carroll & Derby

Things were never the same for Roy Carroll after his dressing room bust up with Paul Jewell. He never returned to number one status for any length of time and Clough has preferred the wide eyed madness of Stephen Bywater so far this season.

Carroll has been released by the club to join Danish club Odense BK on a reported 3 year contract. The former Manchester United and Northern Ireland international made the move to be playing first team football again and joins a team who were runners-up in the Danish Superliga last season.

When speaking to the DCFC website he tried to ‘big up’ the move and nearly succeeded in making it sound like a huge step up (no disrespect to Danish football…. just Roy!)

"I look forward to playing football on the highest level again, last season, I saw several Danish clubs against Manchester City, therefore I know it's a tough league, but I am ready to do my best."

The club was quiet on the subject of him moving out, with no teary goodbye or ticker tape parade through the city streets.

It is expected though that should they finally manage to offload Claude Davis, a guard of honor will be formed on his departure, if only to make sure he actually does leave Derby!

That’s it for RamBites this week.

More news when it breaks…or at the very least splinters.
