There had long been speculation that Gilles Sunu would join Derby on loan from Arsenal and it seems that when there was little chance of James Vaughan returning from Everton, the deal was finally done.

Gilles became the latest loan signing for the Rams on Friday and will be part of the squad for the remainder of the 09/10 season. The Rams will be looking for creativity and goals and he will be looking to continue his development and return home for a regular spot in the Gunners line up.

He spoke to the Gunners official site about his move to Derby:

"I spoke with Arsène Wenger and he told me it would be a good thing to go out on loan," said the Frenchman. "I think Derby is a good club to go to.

"To play week-in, week-out is a very important part of football. In my first season I had the chance to do that with the Under-18s but since then I haven't played as often as that.

"The Reserve League doesn't have as many games and the Championship is more physical. It will give me the chance to work on my crossing and my finishing."

His stay at the Rams got off to a much more immediate introduction than he would have anticipated when, after only meeting his team mates the night before last weekends Swansea game, he was called into action 25 minutes into the match to replace an injured Kris Commons.

Nigel Clough had regularly spoke about adding pace and when speaking to DCFC.co.uk he felt with Sunu he had done just that:

"He brings us some raw pace up front which compliments what Rob Hulse, Kris Commons, and Chris Porter provide for us right now.

"Gilles is still young and learning the game, so it is a great opportunity for him to develop and in turn we hope Derby County can benefit as well from having him with us."

Those in the know at Emirates stadium have big wraps on the junior French international and his time with the Rams may be just what he needs to press his claims. Pace and creativity are two words used when describing his attributes.

From an early age Gilles Sunu was seen as a young player with huge potential. He was born in Châteauroux, Indre in 1991 and began his career as part of the LB Châteauroux academy before moving to Arsenal in 2007. He signed a 4 year deal with the English club for a fee believed to be close to £1 million.

His first team debut came last year when, in September he started in the Gunners League Cup match against West Bromwich Albion.

Gilles has also made an appearance as part of Arsenals Champions League campaign in the team that was defeated by Olympiakos in December 2009.

As a French youth international he has earned caps with the under-17s, as well as the under-18s for whom he was made Captain for their 2008–09 fixtures.

Gilles profile on the Arsenal website had this to say about their young striker:

Industrious front man Gilles proved the value of an injury-free campaign in 2008/09.

Having suffered a string of niggles during his first season at the Club, the Frenchman shone as a regular fixture in Arsenal’s double-winning Under-18 side term. In the FA Youth Cup Fourth Round, Gilles came off the bench to notch a classy hat-trick before more crucial strikes in the Semi-Final and Final.

His willingness to work the channels and a devastating eye for goal make the Frenchman one of the brightest striking prospects in Arsenal’s youth set-up. With 16 second-string outings to his name so far, Gilles will be hoping to continue his development this season.

Derby fans will be hoping that his development will come in leaps and bounds as Nigel Clough will be looking to him to assist in continuing their recent goal scoring form. Especially as Kris Commons is expected to be out of action for some time.

Welcome to Derby County Gilles.

We hope your stay is a pleasant one... with goals aplenty!
