Southampton Striker Attracting Interest From Germany
Tuesday, 23rd Dec 2025 09:07

Damion Downs hasn't yet clicked yet for Saints and has been missing in recent weeks through injury, but it seems he may have a decision to make about his future in the next week or so.

Earlier this month Tonda Eckert insisted that Damion Downs had a part to play this season and was part of his plans, however reports are emerging from Germany that he is attracting interest from Bundesliga clubs.

sportwitness say that "HSV Hamburg have initiated contact over signing Southampton’s Damion Downs in the winter market."

They go on to say that Downs is interested in the move as he wants to represent the USA in the forthcoming World Cup and that Hamburg are looking for a loan deal rather than a permanent move.

As for the player he is reported as planning to evaluate all options in the ‘coming days’ and then make a decision.

It is also said that several other Bundeliga clubs are monitoring the situation carefully.

From a Southampton perspective a loan move might well suit them, Downs has yet to impress, although it has to be said for most of those games he was playing in a team that was playing badly and he was far from the only player struggling, Finn Azaz & Tom Fellows were two other signings who under Will Still were not performing well, but under Tonda Eckert have blossomed.

However they fitted the new manager's system that's based on a centre forward dropping deep and then laying the ball off, when Downs has played under Eckert he has struggled in that system.

So loaning out Downs will maybe help the player himself find his feet again and perhaps return to the club with a bit more confidence for next season.

Saints themselves could also make use of the loan market for a replacement for a like for like replacement.

But how much substance these reports have will soon be apparent, after all this is the silly season, most rumours have their origins with a player's agent, so could this be Damion Downs agent starting to stimulate interest in his client.

He needs to go somewhere and get some game time. There has to be a better player in there surely, as a USA international. Plus the fact we paid good money for him, hopefully he can get enough games to find his form and confidence but getting 5 or 10 minutes here and booed onto the pitch can't be doing him any good.
Hope he goes somewhere and proves he can play!

So it is all down to Will Still why Downs has performed so poorly? I do not agree with your observations.
Regretfully he has shown no real ability to cope with Championship football and looked out of his depth. To date he follows a long list of players that have not worked out.
The sensible option as already stated is loan him out albeit in this country to see at his young age he can cut the mustard in Division 1 or 2.

both Nick and Block 8 (above) have made good points. I always think that the bottom 6 of the Prem. and the top half of the Championship are on a similar level and Downs is still a long way off at the moment. He's no small investment at £7 million, and a 4 year contract but he needs game time with a club willing to give him regular outings, whereas we are looking at possible promotion to a level that is still a bit high, even for some of the existing playing staff we have as as starters.

Making a break thorough in a new country is about more than language and food menus. The interesting winter insert (on the Saints homepage) showed Casper Jander seemingly coming to terms with the English Christmas, but life maybe a harder ask for Damion when he's not even making the bench, let alone making a meaningful contribution (last outing 15 min. sub-in v. Leicester (25 Nov.) when he hardly got a kick, let alone a shot on goal.

A return to Germany, a familiar social scene and a chance to score goals will be a good chance for him to come back next season and make a valuable contribution to our team.

Use some of the money saved on wages to get a CB who can head the ball.
