Two Key Areas That Southampton Need To Sort Out In The Transfer Window
Wednesday, 31st Dec 2025 10:05

Saints supporters seem to have differing opinions about where the team needs strengthening, but for me there are just the two key areas that need to be dealt with urgently.

Most Southampton fans on line have two areas of the team that they want strengthened in the transfer window, they will tell you that we are desperate for a striker and a goalkeeper.

However I am not sure that Tonda Eckert & Johannes Spors will be in agreement with them, I don't think they see replacing Gavin Bazunu as a priority, but I do think that they will be considering a striker in the coming weeks.

But for me neither position is where we are lacking, since the January transfer window of 2018, when Virgil Van Dijk left the club under a cloud, we have lacked a leader of men in the centre of defence, a true Captain, an organiser who leads both by example and by respect.

I have now been saying this for 7 years and i am getting sick of doing so having watched successive teams and managers struggle with the defensive side of things.

We are top heavy with centre halves and if we are to bring someone in then we need to look at a little bit of transfer dealings in both in and out in this area.

We have 5 central defenders and none have shone this season, but that is as much as to how they are being employed as to their abilities.

Ronnie Edwards in my opinion has the passing ability and pace that we so lack in a pedestrian back 3, yet he is being overlooked, rumours abound that Queens Park Rangers are about to make a move for a man who was superb at this level for them on loan a year ago.

If Tonda Eckert doesn't rate him then time to get rid, I would be sorry to see him go, but we truly need to have a clear out at the back and bring in someone who can do a job.

Personally I would take drastic action and send out Nathan Wood & Jack Stephens on loan and replace them with a good experienced Premier League battle hardened centre half, there must be a 30-31 year old out of favour at a club somewhere who meets that criteria.

If we continue with the same 3 that played at Birmingham playing in the same positions, then we will get the same results and that is shipping goals that should have been prevented.

So the big key area for me in January is here in the centre of defence.

But it is all the goalkeepers fault I hear you all cry !

There is a tendency at the moment for a section of our support to blame Gavin Bazunu for everything, to claim that every goal conceded should have been stopped by him, but the reality is that is not the case.

I would agree that Bazunu has made mistakes, but he has made a lot more saves than he had dropped clangers, the problem for him is that he is playing in front of a defence that is not organised, you sort the defence out and suddenly Bazunu will be a different keeper.

The last 3 goals conceded, the two at Oxford and at Birmingham were all about poor defending not poor goal keeping, a failure to deal with critical situations, at Oxford it was about failing to leave someone on the edge of the box to pick up loose balls and then letting their striker get in one on one on the keeper in the final minutes.

At Birmingham it was that game of head tennis all because we had not dealt with the initial cross and thought the ball was going out.

Gavin Bazunu let in less goals than any other keeper when we went 22 games unbeaten two years ago in this division, he was a big part of that run.

Up front it is a different dilemma, in Cameron Archer and Adam Armstrong we have players that will score goals, they offer differing options, but neither are big and tall.

We do have two big strikers, but one has spent much of the last two years injured and has been injured for several months as we speak, I like Ross Stewart, but he hasn't played in 3 months and is at least a month away, can we be confident he will stay fit after that ? I am not too sure.

I think there is a good player in Damion Downs, however he is young and struggled in the earlier part of the season, in his defence he was playing in a team where those around him were just as bad, he was not the only culprit.

I think he can still be a force at this club, but the question is whether it will be this season or next.

I think that he will go out on loan and that will suit both him and his World Cup hopes and also us, as we can bring in a loan striker.

So in this transfer window i would hope that Saints will concentrate on a central defender and a centre forward.

If we get the right men in these positions, especially the one at the back, then we have a strong squad and that includes the goalkeeper.

That is not a position that we need to prioritise "IF" we get it right in the centre of defence, if we don't then we could sign any keeper that you would care to name and it will not make much difference.

We need a goalkeeper who can get us into the play offs, Gavin Bazunu did that two years ago and can do it again.

So a key window for Johannes Spors and his recruitment team, they need to get it right, both in who they buy, but also in shipping out others, they do have issues regarding those coming back from injury, but if they do get it right then I think we can start to be consistent and move up the table.

I am sure that there will be many who disagree with me, especially in regard to the goalkeeper, but I have explained my reasoning in each case, I haven't just launched a witch hunt against those whom I think might leave.

I have also been realistic in where we will be able to get players who will improve the team, that should be the priority of any transfer window, improving the team not just adding extra choices.

That is where we have gone wrong in the past, but in his one transfer window so far Spors has done well, now he needs to do it again, however I do expect more to leave than come in.

I thought Stewart had started to train.
He can't be a starter but would hope to see him off the bench mid Jan if he is training
Can't help thinking the way he played before injury, if managed correctly he will be the difference to a play off push and the play offs themselves

Wood was at fault for the goal v brum if you watch he just stands on edge of area ball watching and doesn't get back in then his man headers across goal without any kind of challenge.

Even with on pitch leaders that you can describe but not name these kind of mistakes will keep happening unless our manager drops players who make the error or tears them a new one to stop these basic errors happening.

They need to loose players, will Bree be sold, Ramsdale being sold would be the only way they bring a keeper in. Edwards and Downes loaned?
If downes did go out who can we get in that will be a big target man in case Stewart fails again?

I agree on the Wood & Stephens scenario as they have not delivered after numerous opportunities, get rid. We will have differing opinions on what is needed in this transfer window.
My main concern still concerns the lopsided balance of the team that the Manager persists with this which would resolve many of our needs in the transfer window. Please Mr Manager revert to 4 at the back with 4 defenders that can actually defend!!!
New Central Defender with leadership qualities a tall striker who can hold the ball up would be my new year wish list.

I don't believe that any keeper better than Baz would come to a mid table championship side
CB wise I would off load 2 of our 5 and bring in a new Jiose Fonte Maguire from Man utd for example
Our m/f looks pretty good once Charles is available He would also be first choice for team captain Bragg is a candidate for going out on loan to get valuable experience in men's football
Up front Archer and Downes don't give us much at this level so if we should sneak promotion they will then be surplus to requirements Stewart is on the way back and if he becomes available during this window then SR will not splash out on another tall(ish) striker
If we don't get promoted then we would become a very attractive take over targett

We need a new GK. Bazunu is very passive IMO.
Yes, a good experienced leader in Central Defence but also a strong dominant GK, who reads the game and barks orders to his defence.
I only ever played at Sunday League level, but I remember when our team had a new GK, who was vocal, read the game, commanded his area and barked orders. We had massive respect for him and we won a lot of games because he had us organised. We suddenly started winning games we had previously lost.
Also, I believe it was the legend Bill Shankly who said you build a great team starting with the GK.

Agree that Downes needs to go out on loan to really see what we have got. Pointless giving him 5 or 10 minutes here and there.

The problem with 30 year old experienced prem league CB's will be wages. Plus remember Stephens would fit slap bang into this criteria! If the right player is available this would be a good move although it would break the SR recruitment model. Personally I think 4 at the back with and extra CM would seem a better shout.

My personal view is that Baz was at fault for one of the last 3 goals. His positioning seems regularly off when dealing with balls knocked across goal. Near post he's good and pointblank saves he's great. I just wonder if because of McCarthys repeated near post howlers he's either favouring or being coached to get too close to the near post? Probably a bit harsh.

agree, CB stopper absolute priority, then tall(er) forward. Only by addressing the CB issue can we go four at the back and properly be on the front foot in games

100% agree.
Good DEFENCE is the foundation for winning games not offence and that is where we must strengthen.
(Witness “Boring, Boring Arsenal”…)
If you have a strong back line, the goal keeper has less to do. And it gives the forwards more confidence because they are not always having to chase the game.

Let's straighten you out on one thing - Ronnie Edwards does not have pace. He's slow as treacle.

We must get a Big Striker Armstrong is not at his best through the middle on his own but with a Big boy to play off he,d be even better. We definitely need a new Keeper Bazunu does not Command his
6 yard box he,s glued to his line too much.

We need :-

1. A proper Goalkeeper, Bazunu is bottom of the statistics of Championship keepers for a reason.

2. A proper Centre Half with some physical presence who can win headers.

3. A proper Centre Forward with some physical presence who can hold a ball up.

If we already had all of the above we would be challenging for automatic promotion.

If we already had two of the above we would be challenging for an automatic promotion playoff place.

We’ve currently got none of them and that’s why we are mid table and have taken two points from the last twelve available.

For the last decades, I find I am still repeating myself ..A goalie is only as good as the defence in front of him. If we are talking about getting to a play-off spot, our present back line isn't good enough at this level, so goodness knows what it might be like if we do get promotion (and remembering last season) it's a early sign of impending disaste. We need a good clearout by the end of the season, and a more secure unit...regardless of where we finish up in this League.

you might find the defence doing better with a decent keeper behind them to organise and dominate his 6 yard box, neither of which bazuna does, his stats do not lie.

Would it be worth a try to start THB up front as the big man as a foil for A.A. .He seems to be on a bit of a run of goals and loves to cavalier forward..
Wood n Quarshie in a 442.

The problem with Bazunu is he doesn't do the basics well. A ball struck across him is always a goal. He also does not command has defence. You look at Donnaruma, Peyr Czech etc they all communicate, Bazunu doesn't.
I completely agree we need a commanding CB but this is what SR resigned Stephens for, anyone could see that was never going to happen.
I also struggle with us playing 5 2 3 as we currently do, as we frequently have 7 in our own 3rd. If we're going to play 5 at the back we need a good attacking midfielder to link things. Jander and Downes are defensively minded which makes our poor record even more inexplicable

Bazunu has been ranked in bottom 3 for GKs in every season he's played! He is definitely poor and statistics show that. Brum knew it. Long-range shots from the first minute. Luckily their shooting was as bad as ours. Then they score with a floaty header that has Bazuna leaping with his arms and legs everywhere. Why? All he had to do was take a step back and catch it above his head. He is definitely one that could benefit with a loan to somewhere without the same pressure - maybe mid-table league 1 - and with a quality GK coach. He has time to become a top GK but we need a mouthy, bully shot-stopper to marshal the defence.
Defence? Flimsy. 4 of our 5 are not overly tall and are light built. And played in the wrong format. With the 3 CBs, teams have identified the space behind the wing backs and play long balls there all the time. One of the CBs covers and we're light in the centre! Only Stephens is experienced, the other 4 are still learning. But Stephens is League 1 quality and not an on-field leader.
The midfield I'm not concerned about, especially when we get Charles back.
Up front. Everyone is calling for a big target man, someone to hold the ball up, bring players in and score goals. You mean Paul Ounachu?
On his first PL start he could have had 4 goals against WHU. The next game, Crystal Palace, he never saw thr ball! Even Juric admitted we played wrong. He identified that the wingers didn't get to the byline and get crosses into the box. Did he train the wingers to do that? No, he dropped Ounachu!! And Tall Paul still finished up top scorer!!
Armstrong was dreadful at Oxford and Brum. He ambled around, no chasing of chances. Manning (more chances created than anyone else in the Championship) put over a perfect cross just outside the goal area, 2 yards in front AA to tap in. He didn't move! Leo hit the upright, AA puts his hands on his head and turns away, the ball gets recycled and played into the box. AA? Wandering around outside the penalty area oblivious to the action. Play Cam Archer v Millwall
In (Loan or buy) GK, CB, Striker.. Loan out for experience - Baz, Edwards, Downes (if he's not sold) Sell - Aribo, Stephens

We could sign Van Dijk himself but it wouldn’t make a blind bit of difference with crisp packet hands in goal.
