Football League rocked as Barnsley join Leeds points battle!

Leeds United have received an unlikely ally in their battle to regain the infamous fifteen points.

Barnsley FC have thrown their hat into the ring and are clearly fighting the United corner.

And the leagues former Tory T**t Brian Malwhinney admitted he was "surprised" to learn of The Tykes support for the Leeds cause.

Malwhinney, who has instructed the League lawyers to robustly defend the United writ, said "Barnsley Football Club has joined Leeds in bringing these proceedings. This surprised us, as the first indication we received of any concern on the part of Barnsley in this matter was when we received the claim form."

The League have until next Tuesday to respond in the High Court Leeds' claims that the FL acted beyond its powers and unreasonably to impose the 15-point penalty, when Leeds allegedly failed to comply with insolvency rules.

The FL however will argue that Leeds pledged not to fight the punishment back in August and will try to get the writ struck out at first instance. Leeds are expected to counter that the pledge is unenforceable.

However the support of Barnsley comes as something of a very welcome move but also a shock. I would not have expected too many Tykes fans to be crying into their beer last May when we were relegated, or over our plight when we kicked off in August 15 points adrift - however I for one was chuffed to bits when they turned over the Scousers last Saturday and will be eternally grateful for their support - even though I think it will be little more than a token gesture in what I feel is a fruitless fight against the footballing authorities.
