Bates Tight-Lipped over Transfer Targets

Ken Bates has declared himself satisfied after yesterday's planning meeting, but is giving nothing away.

Bates met Gary McAllister and technical director Gwyn Williams to discuss the current squad, formalise potential transfer targets, and lay down the plans for the 2008/09 season. He told Yorkshire Radio "It was a very important meeting.  We sat down and reviewed once again every player on the books from the 17-year-olds to the 35-year-olds.

We had a few hours of very intense discussions. Obviously we're not naming names because we dont want to alert other clubs as to what we are looking to do. We know who we want to bring to Elland Road, and we also know whose contracts we want to improve and who we want to move on.” Bates also said that we could see a few more youngsters from the academy in first team action next season, following on from Johnny Howson’s success in the play-offs.

One transfer target could well be Sheffield United striker Luton Shelton. The Blades signed the 22-year-old from Swedish club Helsingborgs in January 2007, but he has started just seven league matches so far. Shelton has two years remaining on his contract and he is believed to be interesting a number of other clubs.

The Jamaican international previously scored nine goals in 19 appearances for Helsingborgs, but Leeds would have to secure a work permit to sign the forward on a permanent basis, and the Bramall Lane mob would want to recoup most of the £1.85 million they paid to sign him.
