The football lacked any quality (on both sides), the ref blew for absolutely everything (apart from Hunt’s desperate attempt to haul down Matty Jacobs to prevent their goal), and the popped up U’s kids were just embarrassing. My high point – had a lovely afternoon with Alfie, the Newport stewards (and the police) were as first rate as ever, in spite of some severe provocation at times, and the chips were excellent.

This has become a bad trend of the season so far, as this is the fifth time this has happened, giving up 11 points from that winning position. Danny Cowley has emphasised how important it is to get that first goal in games, so he will be disappointed we have only managed to go on and win once against Rochdale, when incidently that was the only time we have kept a clean sheet. That is the obvious problem, the defence, and we need to get back to the 2024/25 season when we had 21 clean sheets. Equally the most in League Two that season. After getting 7 points from the first 3 games this season, we have now gone 5 games without a win, or if your glass is half full, we are currently 3 games undefeated.

Once again, it was another game where we’ve led and not taken three points although when you go behind in the 92nd minute escaping with a point must almost feel like a win. It’s a return to the Jersey Mike’s Trophy this weekend, a game intelligently switched from midweek as it suited both clubs, and the visit of Luton Town, the current holders although it was called a different name when they won it of course.

On the balance of play I think nine points is probably about right given the up and down nature of the performances and the last time we had more than nine points after seven games was in the 2020/21 season, so it’s actually been a pretty decent start to the season for us. A trip to Shrewsbury is next up for the U’s. A side who are a few places below us in the table and also one of the lowest scorers in the division. We did the double over them last season and we really could with three points tomorrow. Four of our next five league games are against teams below us in the table so in a few weeks we’ll have a much better idea of what kind of season we’re in for.

Away at Brizzle Rovers we deserved at least a point from our second half pressure, and away at Swindon we deserved at least a point from our first half dominance. In the end though, just one point that should have been at least five. There’s no point in crying about it though, if we don’t take our chances, these things will happen. Mind you, Harry’s goal was a peach!

So yes, where was I? Yes, Rachel Riley on countdown and her conundrum 'EOVLLESGYL'. No that wasn't it - Rotherham away and the scandal that was 'Watergate'!

Musings on the 2013/14 Season (Part 1)

So there I was, quietly sitting with slippers on gazing out of the window and listening to the tones of the countdown clock. When out of nowhere I get a message come through. The sender was Daniel of The U'sual fame. It had been so long that I thought I was seeing things. The message read along the lines of "Squire, I need help with my site, fancy writing a few things for me". At first I was more dumb-struck than wondering how Cian Bolger ever made it as a pro footballer. But then I thought to myself, "Why not Squire old boy, it's about time you shrugged off the tartan blanket and came out of retirement". So here it is, my musings on the 2013/14 season and my attempt to come back into the game, like Doogie away at Walsall and possibly equally as brief.
