COVID Crisis Live Football Zoom Event
at 17:44 27 Apr 2020

Local Colchester United fan Bryn Griffiths and football authors Carrie Dunn and Anthony Clavane have teamed up with Colchester United Football in the Community to support their Coronavirus Community Support Campaign. The CUFITC are supporting Colchester’s Foodbank, Munch Clubs, GO4 Café, Barnardos and Catch 22 in the fight against the Corona Virus when the need in the community is at its highest. The event will be at 745pm on Saturday 2nd May and all you need to do is click on the link at the end of the article to join the event. The event is free of charge but the organisers will be asking you to contribute to the CUFITC Just Giving Page during the course of the evening.

Tom Tayler, Community Development Manager, explained: “It is important for us at an uncertain time like this to be helping our community in any way that we can, whether that be individuals or other organisations who need our support.".
"We have created a JustGiving page dedicated to the community outreach work and would greatly appreciate any donations no matter how small.
"All donations will be used directly to support local organisations in their work to support individuals within the local community, with any surplus fundraising being used to support those most at risk to integrate back into society once government guidelines allow."

On the night local football fans will be able to join two of England’s best football writers discussing the impact of the COVID crisis and how the sport is responding both locally and nationally. The two authors will also draw upon their most recent books to discuss the changing face of football.

After Robbie Cowling’s big announcement we are going to have a lot to talk about. Is the lower league football on the precipice of a huge crisis?

Carrie Dunn will be well placed to throw light on how the game is changing as she has been longlisted for the 2020 Football Book of the Year Award. Carrie has recently published The Pride of the Lionesses the Changing Face of Women’s Football in England which is considered to be one of the best books on the women’s game.

Anthony Clavane is the Sports and Football Book of the Year winner in 2011 and his latest book Moving the Goalposts a Yorkshire Tragedy was one of the Guardian’s Sports Books of the Year in 2016. David Bernstein, the former Football Association Chairperson, said the book ‘Combines social and sporting history with total relevance to the present day’ so he should have plenty to say on the night.

To add a bit of culture to the event Anthony Roberts, from the Colchester Arts Centre, will open the event with a poem. Mike Harwood the poet in residence at Colne Radio, the local community radio station, is also expected to put an appearance in.

The event is been organized by the same team that put together the popular England World Cup event at the Colchester Arts Centre back in 2018.

Colchester United fan and organiser, Bryn Griffiths, said ‘’On Saturday we plan to have a great time with two fantastic authors, local poets and staff from Colchester United. We are thinking of it as a sort of Football Live Aid event but not quite so grand. But even more important than that we want to get right behind the Colchester United Football in the Community Coronavirus Community Support Campaign’’.

You can join the event on the night at from 730 for a 745 kick off by using this link https://us02web.zoom.us/j/86852606907. The link can also be found on @ColuBryn on Twitter and Instagram. There is no need to have the Zoom app to join the show.

Colchester Football in the Covid crisis
at 09:27 13 Apr 2020

It’s absolutely right that football is suspended but there’s still a lot of football fans missing their fix in the Colchester area.

The Box 39 Show on Colne Radio has served up two local shows for your entertainment in these football barren days.

First up is a non-league community special recorded at the recent ‘El Essexco’ (the Essex answer to Spain’s El Clasico) between Harwich and Parkeston FC and Wivenhoe Town FC. The show features Harwich club Chair Tony Armstrong and Nicky Palmer the club captain. Wivenhoe are represented by Captain Tim Dennis and goalkeeper Ben Gallifant.

The show celebrates the grassroots heroes at the base of the football pyramid. There’s also a bit of Harwich history taking in the Kinder Transport, sinking ferries and pirate radio. The show is hosted by Robert May and in the final part of the show his co-host Bill Lawrance goes to the Hannover Arms to find out about one of his ghostly relatives!

You can listen to the non-league community special here:

https://m.mixcloud.com/Box39/127-box-39-show-53-our-day-out-in-harwich/

Next up is a 15minute podcast entitled ‘A Football Voice in the Lockdown’. Hear @ColuBryn ponder how football and in particular Colchester United have responded to the Covid crisis, will the season ever end and what you can do with these footie free weekends?

As you prepare to join a twenty-coach convoy to Old Trafford to cheer on the Us join us on Colne Radio to enjoy the pre-match build up. In this Box 39 football special I joined the show co-hosts Bill Lawrance and Iain Tallentire to pull together a Manchester United special.

The show includes interviews with Frank Nouble and Courtney Senior. George tells about his football playing days in China. We talk about my childhood exploits as part for the Red Army and how Layer Road tempted me to abandon my childhood team. George from FC United of Manchester tells us how Manchester United have changed beyond redemption.

To listen to the show just google Mixcloud Box 39 and look for the latest show or click on this link and play show 35 the football special https://www.mixcloud.com/Box39/

Jon Burns Supporters Association Chair on Colne Radio
at 18:21 3 May 2019

Jon Burns, the Chair of The Colchester United Supporters Association, joined the Colne Radio team and the infamous ColU Lexden Ultras in their Wivenhoe studio. Interspersed with clips from the recent John McGreal interview Jon chewed over the 2018/19 season and considered tweets and messages from Us fans including Tin Jake, Tommo, Dan, Malachi, Iain ‘Boots2Africa’’Finch, ColUPhil, Harrison Tuckwell and Bewildered. In the studio there was still support for McGreal but the decline after Christmas, the alleged lack of a plan B and the accusation of underachievement are all given a good going over. Jon also gave us his inside perspective into his supporters association role. You can hear the Banter with Burns feature here on play again

https://www.mixcloud.com/Box39/078-box-39-show-29-live-and-complete-football-spe

After the main show we all retreated to the pub and widened the discussion with a more informal chat about football. You can hear the second show here where we discussed the booing controversy, fan power, racism and homophobia in football and of course we asked do we have a chance in Lincoln? Oh.and for those that require a trigger warning for all matters McGreal no need to worry during the second show. Listen to the second show here.

Thanks to Jon Burns for coming in we had great fun. Click on the links and enjoy our Burns night!

The Colne Radio John McGreal interview
Postby colubryn » April 18th, 2019, 11:53 pm

Last week I went up Florence Park - aka the Talent Factory - to interview the Col U’s John McGreal. The plan was to use it as part of our Colne Radio annual end of season review. We still aim to use clips of the interview in our end of season show but given the debate raging on social media we thought we should post the whole thing in advance of our Colne Radio Show at 8pm on Thursday 2nd May on FM106.6.

The interview is unashamedly partisan we support the Us and always want John to do well. The interview takes a step back from dissecting the last match and takes a look at the big picture. The interview asks what makes John tick and how does he approach management?

We cover:

His seventeen years as a player some of it at the top including UEFA Cup matches.

John’s Tractor Boy connections and the current Col U contingent of former Tractor Boys.

The managers he has learnt most from and what is it that makes a good manager?

Achieving play off success as a player.

The Col U system.

Team consistency.

What’s the role of a manager when it’s not going well?

The crucial half time talk.

Up and coming Academy players.

How can we push on next season?

I don’t think anyone can doubt John’s total commitment to trying to make our team as good as it can possibly be but what do you think of the Us achievements in 2018/19?

We’re canvassing fans opinions so we can include them and discuss them on Colne Radio on the 2nd May so have a listen to John and tell us what you think?

Col U fans Bill and Bryn review the World Cup
at 12:17 15 Jul 2018

By the time the England reached the semis it was beginning to feel like the Us Championship Promotion season!

Wivenhoe’s Colne Radio couldn’t let the end of a cracking World Cup go without comment. Members of the team that put together the Colchester Art Centre’s World Cup warm up event - Why England Lose - back on Sunday 10th July came together again on Colne Radio to consider how England did so well! Bryn Griffiths and Bill Lawrance of the Bryn and Bill Football show reunited to put together an idiosyncratic special on Colne Radio’s Box 39 Show.

Bryn and Bill were joined by Carrie Dunn, the author of the excellent Roar of the Lionesses and sports academic, to consider what turned out to be an excellent World Cup. Carrie, who was an absolute start at the Colchester Arts Centre, considers Lord Sir Gareth Southgate’s performance, the fall of so many great footballing nations and an equality perspective on the competition.

Mike Harwood, the Il Presidente of Wivenhoe Poetry, joined us to deliver some new world cup poems and capture the raw emotion of the competition. Mike considers how we can be proud of our New England.

Don’t forget it’s the Lionesses (qualification permitting) who are up next in the World Cup in 2019. It’s coming home!

The Mighty Us and the World Cup
at 22:52 9 May 2018

The Colchester United season has drawn to a close with a dull disappointing thud but for those of you with nerves of steel and an insatiable appetite for disappointment we’ve still got the World Cup to look forward to!

Before I tell you about the World Cup warm up event at the Colchester Arts Centre on 10 June can I set you a challenge? What links have our Mighty Us got with the greatest sporting competition on earth. With a little help from Laitty’s excellent website I have come up with the following:

- Teddy Sheringham played 51 times for England appearing at the 1998 and 2002 World Cups although perhaps he was past his peak when he joined our boys on the field.
- Richard Garcia played for Australia in the 2014 World Cup. Embracing the traditions of his England hosts close to his heart his national team were hammered by Germany.
- Matthew Briggs would have played for Guyana in a World Cup Qualifier in 2015 but he couldn’t get his passport sorted out.
- Bongani Khumalo (he was only with us in the Spring of 2015) represented South Africa in the 2010 World Cup scoring a winner against no less than France!
- Dean Morgan played for Montserrat in a 2015 World Cup qualifier.
- Ian Stewart who played for the Us in the early 1990s represented Ireland in the 1986 World Cup Finals.
- Most shocking of all is the continuing role of Aidy “Hoofroyd” in the England set up as the England U21 Manager. Just take that in slowly the man who produced the most embarrassing and awful Us football ever to be seen at the Community Stadium is part of the England set up!

Hopefully with all these glorious Col U World Cup links I have wet your appetites and you will be desperate to join our World Cup Warm up at the Colchester Arts Centre on the 10th June.

WHY ENGLAND LOSE?
COLCHESTER ARTS CENTRE
Sunday 10th June 2018
Tickets £8 / £5 concessions.
Doors open 7pm, show starts 7.30pm.
Tickets from the Arts Centre or http://www.colchesterartscentre.com

With days to go before the football World Cup, England fans will be full of hope. After 52 years of hurt could football be coming home? The answer, of course, is no. With very little hope in their hearts local football fans Anthony Clavane and Bryn Griffiths aka @ColUBryn — and football writer Carrie Dunn - ask you to join them to grapple with the painful question: “Why do England lose?”.

Wear your football shirt of choice and join us to discuss England’s prospects. Expect singing of England football songs, film clips of those terrible England moments, World Cup images, Subbuteo penalty shoot outs and poetry.

Anthony Clavane was a Sunday Mirror football writer in the press pack for four World Cups so he knows what he’s talking about.

Carrie Dunn wrote The Roar of the Lionesses which chronicled women's football in England following the national team's bronze medal at the 2015 Women's World Cup. During the 2014 men’s World Cup, she blogged for Kick It Out, the anti-discrimination organisation.

Cultural anthropologist Charlie Davison is our musical director and Mike Harwood, the Il Presidente of Poetry Wivenhoe, will lead the England poetry slam.

If we have wet your appetite and you want a pre show taster click here for our preview on Colne Radio

Colne radio review of the Us Season
at 19:30 27 Apr 2018

Greetings fellow Us fans. I thought you might like to listen to Colne Radio’s review of the Colchester United season. I was joined in the studio by Jim French - the stalwart Us fan - who pens the French Connection column in the Gazette. We appeared on Bill and Iain's new show Box 39 on our local community radio station Colne Radio.

We chewed the cud and considered what went wrong with a season that promised so much. How did it all go so horribly wrong for Chief Kurtis? Find out how we scored McGreal and whether we think he deserves another season.

We even — after a bit of a search — found some positive memories to take away from the season.

Have a listen and tell us what you think.

You are quite right the theme in the show no 19 was fiction but fear not Anthony will be back next season. We will be doing the best non-fiction football books ever and the best football films ever. When we broadcast Anthony's views if you don't agree we could have a good old barney on the message board, you could tweet in or even come on the show for a right of reply if he doesn't include Cascarino!

Thanks so much for the feedback it's always good to know whether people like what we do as we speak into our mics in our empty little studio!

IT’S SQUEAKY BUM TIME SO PREPARE FOR THE BIG ONE WITH BRYN, BILL, & JIM
at 07:33 6 May 2017

We've just posted the latest Bryn and Bill Football Show number 20 on Colne Radio play again for you to enjoy.

https://www.mixcloud.com/brynandbill/

In the show we talked about all the events at Leyton Orient & concluded Becchetti Out. The show includes a Leyton Orient Fans Trust speech. Eventually we even talked about the match!

Jim French joined us to review the Colchester United season as play of four parts. In the studio we were all looking forward to the finale!

We celebrated and mourned the successes and failures of all our local clubs at every imaginable tier of North Essex & Suffolk borders football.

A final match of the season to fight for a playoff place was what we all dreamed about. We distracted ourselves, from our squeaky bums, by talking with a cowboy from Yeovil. Finally there was an unexpected appearance from a DJ in an Arsenal shirt! Is nothing sacred?

All this and the best music too...because this is Real Football Radio

Can I also add remind you about ‘Your Community Sport Show’. Bill and our friend Iain's new show is on Colne Radio every other Thursday evening from 8.00pm, the shows are all available now for you to listen to ‘on demand’ at www.mixcloud.com/YCSScolneradio

Colne Radio is now broadcasting LIVE on 106.6FM in the North East Essex area, as finally we become an FM station! So now you can join us in your car, in your kitchen, and even in your bathroom!

It was a full house on the night with the studio is bursting with Real Football Radio. Have a listen:

- Tom Eastman plays us his favourite song to get married to, and explains what it’s like to be in that back row defending for Colchester United. Hear what it’s like to get feedback from Roy Kean. Marvel at how Tom treads in the dangerous waters of comparing Big George and Magnus.

- Ian tells us how Boots 2 Africa has worked with Kenyan children to establish a real football initiative that can support and help those who need their support.

- Anthony recalls his Top 5 Football Books, yet he seems to have forgotten 'They Used to Play on Grass' by Terry Venables - thankfully he is a True Lover of Time, and he keeps us abreast of all existential time issue.

And Mole a loyal Wivenhoe fan speaks from his heart to reflect on The Dragons poor season, and sets out his hopes for better things to come.

Are the Us in a promotion fight?
at 20:47 30 Mar 2017

In the latest Colne Radio Bryn and Bill Football Show number 17 Bryn, Bill and Evening Gazette columnist Jim French answer the big question can we reach the play offs? We consider:

- Why is the away form so poor?
- Is McGreal showing too much respect away from home?
- Sammie is gone for the rest for the season so what does the forward line look like for the run in?
- Should McGreal to throw caution to the wind, abandon his defensive set up play 2 up front and go for it?
- Have the injuries done for us?
- What does the run in look like, and finally
- Can we do it?

We thought even before Luton that we were still in with a chance. Jim got it spot on when considered the shape of the team without Sammie Szmodiks. Have a listen and find out whether Jim and the boys got anything else right.

https://www.mixcloud.com/brynandbill/new-episode-17-the-bryn-bill-football-show-

The show also includes all the latest news from Colchester United, Stanway Rovers, struggling Wivenhoe Town and the North Essex form team Brightlingsea Regent. We carry the second part the Kieron Michaels of the Colchester United Academy interview. Chloe Lawrance brings us a feature on women’s football. Finally, we wished Boots2Africa Bon Voyage with Africa Rising before they set off to Kenya.
