jose fonte
at 11:54 31 Jan 2017

Fonte said that he didn't hand a transfer request in during January, and was very specific about making that point (i.e in January) and White/Quinn ran with that statement to make a point that Southampton were mis representing the player's stance to wanting a transfer.

PR exercise for the player and West Ham ahead of Saturday's match.

Fonte has been a great player for us but it is time to move on for all parties.

Realistic Prediction for Saints ..... perhaps
at 10:56 13 Aug 2016

Wouldn't swap our first choice back five for any other team's, though Spurs' are pretty close, so don't think we'll concede many giving us a chance to win plenty of games narrowly.
No 'league leading goal scorer candidate' but if Long, Austin, Redmond and Rodriguez all get ten, 3/4 each from the likes of JWP, Davies, Romeu, Hojbjerg and a handful from the defenders, should see us around 6th to 8th in the league, through the group of the Europa and to a quarter final of one of the two domestic cups.
Possibilities beyond those predictions if it all clicks into place and we stay largely injury and suspension free
2 - 0 Saints today with Redmond scoring on his home debut

The Messi/Suarez penalty
at 17:38 15 Feb 2016

It is the sort of thing Leeds United would have done on the 4th March 1972 had we actually got close enough to a Leeds player to give away a penalty.
With that memory it gets a thumbs down from me.

So what's a panenka?
at 10:05 4 Feb 2016

Panenka was the first to do it to a live audience (1976 European Championship Final)
Not only that but it was in a penalty shoot out for the underdogs (Czechoslovakia) against the red hot favourites (West Germany). Penalty shoot outs were rare as they didn't exist in the domestic game.
To cap it all, it was the winning penalty.
To those that are old enough to see it live on TV it was a truly astonishing moment to witness.
I believe Saints were the first team in our domestic competitions to win a penalty shoot out v United at Old Trafford (FA Cup). Le Tiss was not required to take our 5th penalty which made that night even more satisfying

Pub question for all uglies.
at 16:43 22 Jan 2016

Not sure how anyone can actually remember this detail so I'll go for the most likely on my 18th though by then it was barely worth noting the legality of it all

A Saturday in 1980 at The Onslow waiting for Bob Pearce Blues Band to play (he played most Sat nights and we were regulars)

I was very fond of Pompey Royal despite the name and I seem to remember they sold Palmers in there too (might have been Tally Ho!) I had to google the price of a pint in 1980. It was 35p

Did I read recently that Pompey Royal is being brewed again?

He's a regular visitor to Cheltenham and I often hear of locals saying they were sat next to him at the cinema (with his children) which is near to Yo Sushi or the like. He lives out Ross on Wye way so I guess Cheltenham is the nearest town to him for that sort of stuff.
Well Gloucester is actually closer but suffice to say it doesn't have a sushi restaurant

Best league in the world?
at 17:05 30 Sep 2015

My view is a combination of all of the above though I lean toward Dirk and Tim.
If you measure "best" by the quality of the top few sides in each league the PL falls short.
But if you measure it against general entertainment, atmosphere in grounds (usually created by the away support) and the regular occurrence of lower teams beating the big boys it is miles ahead.
The likes of Leicester last season sticking five past Utd and West Ham's away results this season are largely unheard of in the other major European leagues.
Good topic to discuss Sonic

I think we need a back up goalkeeping coach. We've only got Dave Watson as far as I know and if he gets a bout of man flu right in the middle of the season when the fixtures are coming thick and fast I worry about how our keepers are going to warm up properly when it's a bit nippy.

Morning Blue

Great start for City. Not seen Chelsea so torn apart for quite some time. Mane had a good go at it for us at Stamford Bridge last season. His best game for us by a long way. Chelsea's vulnerability is extreme pace.

Yep, we probably do need a CB by Sept 1st to give us four. Less than that makes us vulnerable to injury, suspension and general tiredness with the games we have to play. Who it will be I've long stopped trying to second guess and I rather enjoy the unexpected if I am honest.

Will follow your game v Everton with interest. I quite like Everton too as a club so don't really mind how it turns out.

Yep, I would be interested but wouldn't want to step any one's toes. No idea there was such a facility and how to post it. On the "Blogs" header above or do I need special access?
I'll work it out. Thanks for the invite.

New directive from the top?
at 17:01 16 Jul 2015

Agree with what you have said 10i on both counts. Is two minutes a record for a thread to disintegrate into a spat or can it be beaten?
In response to your perfectly valid question Sonic, the answer is yes for the reasons some have opined.
Additionally, these are young men conducting their first interviews in a foreign country and (except Juanmi) in a foreign language. I would imagine they are primed and the questioning is kept simple so that they can respond accordingly. We'll hear words like "big" "nice" and "good" a lot.
Makes for very dull interviews but we will continue to watch them no doubt, myself included

Palace chairman shows the way?
at 18:22 10 Jul 2015

I admire your passion feq1 and welcome it as a fellow Saints supporter.
But if any of the top six clubs want any of our players at any time, they only have to stump up the appropriate transfer fee, double the player's wages and they are gone for the lure of probable CL football , trophies and big stadia crowds.
Look at the Fabian Delph story today. He signed a 4 1/2 year contract in January and 6 months later he is off to Man City tomorrow it seems. Big fee no doubt and a big pay rise.
Only if we were selling to the other PL teams would I start to agree with you. Cork is the only one in recent years that I can think of, and I would argue he was squad player, and we offered him a contract but he preferred to try for regular first team starts elsewhere.

£65k per week for Scott Dann according to the tabloids is his fantastic new deal.
If that is showing the way I think we should go in the other direction.

Schneiderlin at Staplewood today!

It is a riskier strategy for the big boys though Sonic. What Liverpool, for example, are buying at a premium is "PL proven" (Clyne), which is just as likely to fail as we saw and is a stupid phrase, or a bigger chunk of the global branding (Firminio in South America).
Saints at this stage of our development, and with the generated transfer income can take that gamble more easily, and can spread the risk by buying two players to replace one.
I take your point that it may not always work out (player wise). We just have to think along the lines we will have more successes than failures.
