Varying our playing style 19:01 - Mar 2 with 1147 viewsJethroJack

Lots of bollox written on here (no surprise there) about us losing our playing style & identity & becoming boring to watch. GM has explained often enough in press conferences that he's trying to make us more versatile & adaptable depending on the opposition & game circumstances etc, so we're less predictable.

Even title winning sides like Utd, Chelsea & City end up getting crucial points from grinding out results from boring performances during a season. In fact, if it wasn't for a handfull of boring wins each season (yielding say 10-15pts) even these clubs wouldn't have won the titles that they have.

GM deserves enormous credit for the past 12 months, both for the players he's brought in & for achieving 58pts from 41 games to date....a game average of 1.4pts.

our problem for soooo long has been that our tactics are usually found out in the last third of the season meaning other teams were able to cancel us out and get the better of us. so I;m glad we are adding an extra formation choice so that it becomes more of a guess as to which formation we will play. Also means we might get more points than if we sticked to 1 formation.

The last manager that sorted out our defence problems ended up leaving a base that Rodgers took and got us promoted with.

Who's to say that sorting out our defensive shape and organisation out will allow us to push on towards the end of this season and beyond.

I'd argue that Laudrup didn't make a bad job of adopting a more defensive shape away from home just prior to xmas during his first season with us. I think it was against Spurs that we first saw it.

our Stamford bridge win in the capital one cup, arguably our finest hour, don't recall that all out attack either.

think we ground out a couple of results under Brendan too - anfield away?

but its great people have principles, and are willing to walk away if the perceived dross continues, see first comment at end of this piece http://www.walesonline.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/swansea-city-know-how-

was very concerned at the monk appointment, but he's got us to 40 points, we can now enjoy the last third of the season for once - this will not be a regular occurrence in our stint in the top flight. we might get the silky football back in a season or so but our points total will be the poorer for it with no doubt plenty of morally undeserving defeats to teams with higher quality (i.e more expensive) players.

unless we get to the next level, whatever that is..... there will come a point in our evolution where progress of any sort (points, position, beating the big guns) becomes extremely difficult. there have been hints of it over the last 2 seasons, got knows how we will cope when it actually happens. but life will go on.

until then, lets keep trying to evolve, even if it feels like a step backward to move forward (or stand still, which is just as good in the premier league!)
