Actually the ratios are essentially the same.
We have two solid options and a backup playing for one goalkeeping position, and two solid options and a backup playing for one striking position.
Which other top ten clubs exclusively play with a solitary striker, which of them have a greater budget available to pay for them and which have European football available to offer enough game time to keep them happy? |  |

So you count U21 keepers, but not U21 strikers? I don't count either in our first team squad.
How many strikers did we have last season? Didn't do us any harm, did it. As said before, we only play with 1 striker, so we don't really need another. |
If Gorre wasn't on loan he could be counted. As things are we have no under-21 strikers who could step up, whereas Vickers looks okay for the bench and perhaps even Zabret (who has Slovenian Prva Liga experience).
We play two strikers in many games, making a substitution in the second half. If we have an injury or suspension we cannot do that. What about the answer to my question?
Anyway I have no objection to Tremmel. I just agree with many pundits and rival fans that we look a bit thin up top. If Gomis keeps fit then probably that is no problem.
P.S. Re Dr Winston's answer: essentially you concede my point that none of our rivals do operate with just two strikers in the first team squad. We can beg to differ as I accept that you have an arguable case, but this strategy carries a certain risk. My position has always been that the third striker should be a younger hungry type - so this is more about the extra cost than the problem of unsettling a player who will accept fighting for a place. If he had been given a coaching role, the club would have announced it as such. He doesn't have any badges afaik, and the club already has good development goalkeeping coaches (Andrew Sparkes).
Put me in the apparent majority that would have preferred to see Davies, Vickers or Zabret given a shot at senior football in the extremely unlikely event that both of our international quality goalkeepers wind up unavailable.
Faith in young professionals is something to be praised, and this club has been rewarded for it quite often in the past. | | | |

Good news.
I suspect we told him he'd be third choice and offered him a lower wage accordingly. He initially rejected and went to see if he could get a better deal. He hasn't and the club were happy to keep to the original offer and get him back. He's well thought of at the club and I doubt his weekly salary is making much dent in our budget. While his impact on the pitch will likely be minimal unless we get bad injuries, I'm sure he'll have a positive impact behind the scenes. | | | |
