I agree with yescomeon, an acer aspire is a great choice. Bought one in 2013 and it lasted me 3 years, bear in mind It handled a lot of strenuous tasks from my computer science days. My personal opinion if you're looking under 500, have a gander at some MacBook air's (2014 onwards) if you don't mind using Macintosh of course. They have great build quality, very good resale value and are workhorses. The MacBook air hasn't changed from 2010 however, but a model from 2014 onwards would be in much better shape.
