Lol.

As it happens, I’m very interested in the use of religious imagery in rituals. Have been ever since I had a good friend in my early twenties who came from Lewes and I went to see the 5th November parade down there with him. It’s actually quite incredible that it still continues.

I find religion interesting as a cultural / historical issue. A hangover from college.

I’m sure you must have some things you know something about...

It’s both a religion of peace and a religion of war. Religious texts were often written by several different men over several centuries. It’s no wonder they constantly contradict themselves. There’s page after page of “you should live in peace with each other”, followed immediately with “you should smite your enemies into tiny bits”. Obviously I’m paraphrasing.

Judaism was founded in a period of slavery. Christianity in a period of occupation. Islam in a period of civil war. After all, the prophet was a warlord who conquered much of the Arabian peninsula. There’s an element of struggle to all of them so there’s always going to be a lot of militant language and concepts.

I think they bum ladies more than westerners mind.

OK I've changed it.

The "fiery cross" of Scottish legend wasn’t the upright Roman cross which is commonly used by the KKK. It was the X-shaped cross of St. Andrew.

Sorry Loh, but that is only partially true.

The KKK obviously took practices from Scottish clans (hence the name!) but the ‘fiery cross’ of Scottish use you mention in itself stemmed from a number of religious based rituals. The original practice used burning wood for a summons to a meeting and a burning cross where the meeting was about blasphemy.

The book the Clansman that you’re referring to (and the subsequent film) did take note of Scottish custom. But they’ve always made a big point about their Protestant calling.

In 1923, they published a recruitment pamphlet that stated re the cross:

“a sign of the Christian religion sanctified and made holy nearly nineteen hundred years ago by the suffering and blood of the crucified Christ, bathed in the blood of fifty million martyrs who died in the most holy faith, it stands in every Klavern of the Knights of the Ku Klux Klan as a constant reminder that Christ is our criterion of character.”

And:

“Who can look upon this sublime symbol, or sit in its sacred, holy light without being inspired with a holy desire and determination to be a better man? "By this sign we conquer."

The original head of the KKK (this second, 20th century version) started the movement by building an altar, on which was placed an American flag, a Bible, and a sword, he set fire to a wooden cross, and declared himself Imperial Wizard of the Invisible Empire of the Knights of the Ku Klux Klan.

If you want to argue that has nothing to do with Christianity, you go ahead, but you’re mistaken.

The practice of burning a cross started as a revolt against the power of the Church (Rome) and was a stand against iconography - back about a thousand or more years ago. The Klan like it as part of their ‘anti Catholic’ views.

” If you want to argue that has nothing to do with Christianity, you go ahead, but you’re mistaken.”

Well, no, all your points of reference relate to a completely different organisation that came about as the result of Dixon’s book and Griffiths’ film some fifty years after the “original iteration” I make mention of. The only thing they share is the name.

I’m talking about the late 1860s and an organisation formed as an old comrades club, a means for former members of the Army of Tennessee to keep in touch. They took a big slice of Celtic lore filtered through the works of Scott - Waverley, Lord of the Isles etc.. - overlaid that with Greek scholarship and added a lamina of sub-Masonic ritual and costume. Grown men playing silly buggers, basically, whose activities for the most part seemed to consist of talking about the good old days, drinking whisky and chasing girls.

The central figure of veneration for that organisation wasn’t Christ but General Bedford Forrest and he along with the founders disassociated themselves when younger hotheads became involved and the organisation folded. This was all decades before the events you’re talking about, Lis.

An idea isn't responsible for those who believe in it.

I spoke about the Klan burning crosses. You argued about why that is,

The first iteration of the Klan didn’t burn crosses. It’s a practice only carried out by the current lot. Who are an extreme, Christian (specifically Protestant) terrorist organisation.
So talking about the motivation of the earlier group is irrelevant since it’s obvious I wasn’t referring to them.

And yet at a gathering near Lewisburg, Tn in 1867 a timber saltire was lit by a former aide to General Johnson and formed the backdrop as the health of Jeff Davis was toasted.

Why do you think that was on balance of probability, Lis? A Protestant fundamentalism that sat ill with the hog roast and liquor or because it was intended to call to mind the old stars and bars, the Confederate battle flag?

Sigh.

That is completely irrelevant.

As I’ve pointed out more than once, I am referring to the current incarnation of the KKK who, in the words of a historian specialising in the history of the KKK, burned crosses as a symbol of their laughable ‘faith’.
“Through the 1960s, Klan leaders regularly depicted the cross as embodying the KKK's Christian roots -- a means to spread the light of Jesus into the countryside. ”

The KKK themselves say it is based on their Christian ‘faith’. I’ve quoted what they’ve said earlier in this thread.

There is no recorded incident of the earlier, 19th century incarnation of the KKK burning crosses. A saltire is not what is being referred to. The earliest recorded incidence of the KKK burning a cross was around 1915 ish.

The question was whether white supremacist terrorism has a connection with Christianity. It does. You may not like that, but it is a matter of fact. However many times you refer to an earlier incarnation that I didn’t mention will not change that.

Do you believe in reincarnation, Lis?

The way you seem Hell bent on having the final word I’m convinced we must have been married in a previous life.
