Messi wins his 7th and there is no doubt he is a wonderful footballer but theres no way that he should have won it this year imo.

Personally i would have gone with Lewandowski or probably Jorginho who won the Euros with Italy and the Champions league with Chelsea.

Fully agree.

With him now playing in France as well it makes it seem even more of a farce.

Poll: What are we more excited for?

And Ronaldo declined to attend. Presumably he's tired of seeing Messi win it as well.

He was top goalscorer and second in the assist table in La Liga, dragged an absolutely dire Barcelona team to be competitive in the league, look at that same team now. Won Copa Del Rey. Won the Copa America with Argentina for the first time in 28 years, was top scorer, top assister and player of the tournament in that.

If anyone else in the world would have done that, they'd have won the Ballon D'or. It's just expected of Messi so his achievements are lessened.

Jorginho did have a good season but think Lewandowski should perhaps have won it this year with Salah up there as well.
As regards Jorginho there is a question as to whether he is even the best midfield player in his own club side never mind the best player in the World

Needs to get plenty of rest for the 20 minutes a week he'll be playing under Rangnick for the rest of the season.

Tangled up in blue.

A dire Barca team in a very very weak financially challenged division in which only Atletico offered any form of competitiveness whilst Real M were clearing the decks for the impending arrival of M'bappe. Spain's FFP is more stringent down to the amount of debt the clubs were in and the amount of tax they owed.

Barca and Messi finished 3rd in the league just ahead of the two footballing global giants of real sociedad and real betis and never once challenged for the title.

Messi was joint top scorer in copa america with Luis Diaz of Colombia (who managed the same amount of goals in less games!!!).

As for the ambiguity of the ballon d'or - The Awards are bestowed according to on-field performance and overall behaviour on and off the pitch. Where does Messi's tax evasion fit into this criteria?

Not to mention holding the club he’s revered at and claims to adore to ransom, helping to nearly bankrupt them in the process.

A team, Messi aside that is largely unchanged and is now below those global giants, shows the impact he had. Never challenged for the title but they were 2nd, 2 points behind Atletico with only 2 or 3 games left, if we were that far behind the playoffs in that situation this season I'd say we were challenging for them.

2nd in the PL last season lost to 5th in La Liga in a European final. I'd say the league was doing okay. Sociedad have kept up their form and are level with the only team last season to offer any form of competitiveness.

Joint top scorer or top scorer, same thing. Top assister and player of the tournament on top of that.

You can argue the main competitor for the Ballon D'or is a someone who plays for a team who just poaches their nearest rival's best player every season (himself included) in order to render the league completely uncompetitive winning it for the last 9 seasons in a row. I wouldn't argue that though as it detracts from what a good player he is, as does the argument Messi didn't do anything or deserve the award last season.

Spanish economists estimate the income generated at Barcelona to be around 30% of their turnover over the last 4-5 years. His contract was never the problem. The fact they were spending £150m on players like Dembele and Coutinho and wages of £650k a week to Griezmann who don't generate that income was the problem.
