NZ travel thoughts & ideas 12:03 - Jan 4 with 2338 views | BristolR | Afternoon lovely people. We’re planning a c8 week trip to NZ /Aus in March/April and would love to hear your ‘must do’s’. We’re likely to travel into Auckland, stay with an Aunt in New Plymouth for a few days and then travel to & explore South Island (3 weeks?), before coming back to North Island for a couple of weeks. Might also squeeze in a couple of weeks doing Melbourne/Sydney/Cairns & Great Barrier Reef. Any recommends gratefully received! Many thanks

NZ travel thoughts & ideas on 17:35 - Jan 5 by joe90 | Was it hoki? The whitebait and pineapple fritters were also great. You don’t get them in the UK. Thinking about it, the NZ chip shops remind a lot of the ones I encountered on a trip around the Highlands. [Post edited 5 Jan 17:58]

I think it was Southern Blue Whiting, but I’m not sure.

NZ travel thoughts & ideas on 18:50 - Jan 5 with 315 views | WirralHoop | My brother lives in Wellington and have been lucky enough to visit NZ a few times. My favourite place is Kaikoura, whale watching with snow capped mountains as a back drop. The walk round the peninsula is also breathtaking. [Post edited 5 Jan 18:51]

Not sure if you realise the distance involved with these places. If you only have a couple of weeks I would suggest maybe just doing Sydney and Melbourne. That would give you a week in both giving you time to see and get a feel of both cities, and only a short flying time, unlike Cairns to either of them.
NZ travel thoughts & ideas on 07:38 - Jan 6 with 140 views | Konk | I had 3 months staying with friends and travelling around NZ about 20 years ago and absolutely loved it. Stunning scenery, great food and drink, and incredibly friendly/hospitable locals. The cities are all fine, but nothing special, so if you only have a few weeks, then my advice would be to spend as much time in the outdoors as possible. My favourite of the cities was Wellington, and I thought Auckland at the time was pretty well summed-up with "a bunch of suburbs looking for a city" {albeit with some nice suburbs to hang out in). Off the top of my head, as others have said, the Coromandel Peninsula and Bay of Islands are both stunning, and I was blown away by the North Island, but the South Island is absolutely ridiculous. Highlights for me were Skydiving at Lake Wanaka , an overnight stay on a boat in Milford Sound and getting out on the water in a kayak at dawn, walking the Abel Tasman national park, and a couple of great days at vineyards in Martinborough when staying with friends in Wellington. Also enjoyed whale watching in Kaikoura, Queenstown was a good laugh with white water rafting etc, Napier was a nice stopover for the Art Deco architecture, and I had an interesting time at a Maori cultural event/dinner in Rotorua - obviously very touristy, but I was on my own so spent most of the evening chatting with the organisers . Friends had a holiday home is Punakaiki, which I really liked because the habitat was so different. It's really amazing how varied the geography of NZ is given its relatively small size. Just travelling from A to B is incredible because the backdrop is usually so beautiful. The pies are great too. I was on a 2 cheese and steak pie a day habit by the time I left. Somewhere I could very happily live for part of the year. Have a fantastic trip.

NZ travel thoughts & ideas on 08:06 - Jan 6 with 124 views | silky | Loved it so much in my travels in 2009 that I emigrated from the UK to NZ permanently in 2012. I'm in the Whangaparaoa Peninsula about 40mins North of Auckland. It's an outdoorsy country so plan plenty of activities that involve being in our big backyard. Have an absolute blast while you are here.
