He/She knew that Southend FC would take the flack, not them. Without the tounge in cheek humorous controversy (as everybody knows there is zero connection with any criminal) most folk would remain oblivious of them. Frankly, the publicity isn't actually bad for Southend F.C. It has attained far more media prominence than anything Robbie has achieved. Colchester United marketing is appalling, but then the club doesn't employ a marketing specialist or customer services expert.
