"We have learned today of the sad news that Nicky (Smudger) Smith has lost his long and brave fight with Cancer.

Anyone who knew Nicky will know how loved he was on and off the field and will be so sadly missed.

At this sad time our thoughts are with his family, friends and former teammates

RIP Nicky - your smile and humour will be missed"

Oh this is such tragic news. Never mind seeing him at his prime on the pitch, I had the pleasure of meeting Nicky many times in his football policing role, and he was always great company and a wonderful copper for the Essex Constabulary Col U football squad. I asked one of them at Brizzle earlier this season how he was getting on, and whilst he didn't betray any confidences, he didn't sound too positive.
