two things i took from it...one, like everyone seems to agree, McCarthy isn't up to the job, 2) nor is Djenepo, he was absolutely awful. |
| News Comment | Who Will Be The Next Southampton Manager ! A Surprise Candidate Emerges. at 18:24:07
We probably all agree that the two managers after RH have been worse. But the bigger picture is that RH should have been removed at least a year before he was (after one of those 9 goal defeats would have been a good moment--and would have been the end for most managers). I can't see Nick's holding a candle for RH makes much sense. If you look back over the longer frame of RH's tenure, things were getting pretty awful. Meanwhile, back at the ramch, although there's obviously discussion about a new manager, would people be shocked if SR landed up sticking with Selles? |
| News Comment | Southampton V Manchester City The Verdict at 02:20:30
There's a lot of money in the big sports leagues in the USA, but what they all have in common is that they're competitive every. There is nothing equivalent to the PL stranglehold that Nick is complaining about. The answer for gthe PL, it seems to me, is what all those leagues (american football, baseball, basketball, hockey, 'soccer") in the USA all have--some version of a salary cap. A match-day salary cap, properly administered, would immediately level the playing field significantly in the PL. The big money clubs would still be able toi buy as mmnay overpaid starts at they wanted, but they wouldn't be able to filed the all under a salary cap. Imagine City, still employing all the people they have now, but not being able to play them all on match day. |
| News Comment | Spurs Definitely Without Four For Trip To Southampton at 01:17:25
Selles's selection tomorrow will be interesting. I'm more and more thinking he's been the "brains" behind many months of stupid selections and terrible substitutions. In today's Echo he says how happy he is with Moi Elyounoussi. He surely is having a laugh, no? If he is one of our front four, we already know we're not going to score a goal. Plus Adams, he hasn't got a goal since the middle of November but keeps getting picked. Sulemaina is getting a lot of time but he hasn't even hinted at scoring since he's been here. And the less said about Armstrong, Mara and Walcott the better. Stuart Armstrong and Onuacho MUST start, and what would be the risk in putting Orsic on to replace anyone at all? He can't be less effective than any of them. But like so many managers Selles seems to have a "shape," and a "structure" and a "profile" to maintain, and already seems inflexible about ti, even in the face of failing results. A bit of thinking outside you own box is what's needed, Mr Selles! |
| News Comment | Southampton At Leeds United The Preview at 16:45:00
I for one would be comfortable with last week's side (plus KWP or not), except for Elyounoussi. I know the argument for him is about his defensive play and his positioning etc, but I can't see it. He adds little to this team either defensively or going forward. |
| News Comment | Ralph Hasenhuttl Lambasted By Some Saints Fans As Pochettino Is Linked at 16:44:23
Your frequent trick again...<<if we had performed at Villa and taken all three points then we would sit 8th this morning>>. Well, we didn't and we don't. But by the same logic, how about: If we hadn't unexpecedly won that game against Arsenal towards the end of last season, we'd now be playing in the Championship. |
| News Comment | Watt View - Wrong choices and poor decisions result in missed opportunity at Molineux at 00:31:09
i agree with the previous couple of comments. It is despite RH that we have survived. He has DEFIED PL MANAGERIAL GRAVITY for 3+ years. But every time we get a result the delusional "supporters" (whom I applaud only because they'll support us when we're in the championship as well), come out acting as if we're now saved, ignoring 3+ solid years of MISMANAGEMENT by RH. As this article articulates, he is still getting it wrong pretty much every week. |
| News Comment | Southampton Still Looking For Another Central Defender ! Targets In Sight at 23:52:55
You're not wrong that an experienced head in the middle of defence would help, and it would help in developing younger players as well as organizing everyday play. However, that is not the solution to the problem. Even these older and more experienced fantasy players have their own game to play, and in the end it's not their job to be on-field coaches. The solution to this problem, a problem you rightly diagnose, is off the field, it's in the coaching. It's a relief to see that there's some new blood amongst the coaching staff, andf we'll see how that helps or not. But the problem is in the end down to a basically ineffective COACH...i.e RH. I've pointed out before that with the possible exception of JWP, not a single Saints player has greatly improved over his 3+ years of tenure (KWP was already good when he arrived and RH even did his best to screw that up). A good coach improves players. And if he can't improve them, he motivates them to over-perform. RH simply doesn't do that, hasn't done it, and probably never will do it. |
| News Comment | Saints Far From Favourites For Premier League Relegation at 01:04:48
Nick's arguments are as tiresome and avoidable as his chronic abuse and misspelling of the English language. (Undoubtably!) Yes, it's true that the club has not been investing in success. But it has been investing in failure...RH. |
| News Comment | Southampton At Norwich City The Verdict at 06:17:12
the goalkeping errors shouldn't have made a difference. The basic weakness with the team right now is that it dominates for one half but doesn't go for the jugular. And then it tries to shut down in the second half when the other side has changed tactics. RH screws up his 2nd half response 75% of our games. He seems to be blindsided by the fact the the other team will change, and then he makes really frankly astonishingly bizarrre substitutions. There have been one or two games where that wasn't true, but not many. If McCarthy lost us 3 points this week, RH loses us 3 points more weeks than not. |
| News Comment | Southampton At Everton The Preview at 14:10:17
Ralph starts the season as he spent last season--making strange team selections. McC, Livramento, Stephens, Salisu, Perraud, JWP, Romeu, Walcott, Djenepo, A.Armstrong, Adams. At least Redmond isn't starting, but this definitely looks dodgey to me. |
| News Comment | Southampton Net £28 Million In Ings Transfer at 01:00:09
I suppose it was inevitable, but I'd never have guessed Villa as the destination. What is he thinking? (Unless JWP is also going, and then it might make sense.) Right now the next step is to take RH seriously when he says that existing players have to up their game by 3 or 4 goals a season. To me that means dump Redmond before it's too late. He's a Championship player (he can cause panic there, but not so much in the EPL) and has shown that for several seasons now. If he starts in our first game, that'll be a sign that we're going nowhere. On the other hand, looking on the bright side, we dump Redmond and have a few quid in the bank to buy a new striker (and maybe a new goalie). Ings leaving isn't a disaster fort us but an opportunity--let's see what SFC makes of it. |
| News Comment | Back To Business For Southampton And Hasenhuttl Is The Man To Lead Us Forward at 15:54:29
Whether we want RH to go or not, it seems pretty likely that he's staying. If that's the case then Nick's question has to be turned back on him. If we're going to have RH for the foreseeable, what does RH have to do to improve? There are serious doubts and questions, as well as some damning numbers, hanging over him. In this league where getting your planning, team selection and tactic right is paramount, and where making in-game adjustments and effective substitutions is crucial, RH makes huge errors week in and week out. He also seems unable to motivate his players in any consistent way. So, assuming he's not going to get sacked, how is he going to improve in all those areas? |
| News Comment | Why Southampton's Trip To The Etihad Shows The Premier League Is Dying at 15:27:07
The compariosns to US sports by Colburn, Nick et al above are to the point whilst also missing the most important point.....Even in the home of the most capitalism, every major league imposes a salary cap on teams. The effects are obvious. All the major sports are much more competitive and more genuinely unpredictable than the EPL. I'd vote for trying a salry cap system before endorsing a breakaway league! |
| News Comment | Southampton V Liverpool The Verdict at 00:35:21
Apart from that, I thought Diallo showed real class, Forster and Djenepo not so much. The victory is great of course, but we really do have a very thin squad! |
| News Comment | Southampton V Liverpool The Verdict at 00:32:44
I'm hoping to post a bit more this year....Anyway, when I saw Klopp's teamsheet I did think Saints would win. In fact I texted to an old friend who's on Liverpool training staff: <<Given Klopp's disrespectful team selection, I bet Southampton score at least one go from a corner or set piece. Other abetting propositions… One, Thiago gets booked if not sent off. Two if shaqiri comes on the field Southampton will win, but if Origi comes on win.>> Klopp played right into my hands! |
| News Comment | Little Steps Again On Saturday At Manchester City at 15:18:02
The strawman in Nick's article is the idea that we critics thought Saints had a right to win that game. Nothing could be further from the truth. But I think what some of us did expect is that they'd actually TRY to win it. After all, as Nick conveniently doesn't mention, it was a cup game--why not give it a go? Instead we had a mind-numbing defensive tactical set-up, populated by pretty much the same old faces. And to my eyes it was true what a number of people said...the players looked not crushed but disinterested for most of the game. Perhaps a slightly more adventurous tactical set up might have made them a bit more enthusiastic? |
